Chemistry 30AL Guide to Oral Presentations for the Soil Analysis Project The oral presentations will be administrated by both your TA and the course instructor Refer to the lab schedule for the date of the presentations The oral presentation performance will be evaluated based on both the individual performance and the group coordination (I) Materials/Equipment available in labs during the presentations: (i) White-board (ii) Over-head Projector (iii) XGA/VGA Signals Converter (for connection of laptop to TV for presentations) (iv) TV that can be connected to (iii) for presentation Transparencies can be obtained from Dr. Henary. If you have a laptop computer, you may be able to connect it directly to our TV system for your presentation (i.e. Power Point). However, your group is responsible for checking with the course instructor in advance (NO LATER THAN MONDAY (December 5) BY 2pm) before the oral presentation to ensure that the system is compatible with your computer. Your group may also use posters to enhance the “visual” effects during the presentation. (II) Structure of the Soil Project Presentation: Each group will have about 20 minutes to present the contents of the project. When presenting the soil project, please keep in mind the following items: (i) Each group MUST present an overall procedural structure in a FLOWCHART format of the entire project including the UNKNOWN SOIL NUMBER. (ii) Discussions/Explanations of methods used (whether they gave positive or negative results during the project) and the logics behind the procedures. IMPORTANT: Presentations should be focused on the procedures that lead to POSITIVE results/identifications. DO NOT spend time on explaining procedures during the presentation that did not give any meaningful or conclusive results. Possible source of errors in the project should ONLY be discussed if times are permitted. (iii) Each member of the group MUST understand the concepts behind the project (i.e. understand the real chemistry!). (iv) MUST report the %BY MASS AS WELL AS THE UNCERTAINTY for each compound present in the soil sample (remember that they don’t add up to 100%!) DO NOT SHOW ERROR ANALYSIS OR DETAIL CALCULATIONS IN THE PRESENTATIONS. Those items should be included in the written report. Simply report those values in the oral presentations.Guide to Oral Presentations for the Soil Analysis Project Both your TA and the course instructor will administrate the oral presentations Refer to the lab schedule for the date of the presentations The oral presentation performance will be evaluated based on both the individual performance and the group coordination (v) MUST show all the literature as well as experimental spectra for identifying the soil compounds. For this part, you can simply show the paper copies of the spectra to the whole class. If you want, you can copy all the spectra on transparencies or scan them into your computer for presentation. (vi) Each member in the group MUST present a “significant” portion of the project. In other words, no member should simply report values or give introduction or give conclusions during the entire presentation. (vii) EACH group MUST respect all the other groups during the presentations. DO NOT make any noises during someone else presentation. Turn off the ringer function on your cell phone BEFORE the scheduled
