CHEMISTRY 30AL SPRING 2004 SOIL ANALYSIS PROJECT REPORT GUIDELINE This is a GROUP report Refer to the DUE DATES Listed on the Lab Schedule General Comments There is no prelab assignment for this project You will begin the work on the project as a group during your first lab period the week of May 24th Data and Obserations Throughout the assignment you must turn in a copy of your data each period Each member of the group needs to be acquiring data The report for this assignment consists of two parts an oral report and a written report The format of your final written group report will differ from previous reports The report must be typewritten double spaced using 12 point Times or Times Roman font formatted with 1 inch margins well written in a coherent and grammatically correct style The report should not be a collection of different parts from the individual group members It must be one coherent document PRINTED from a SINGLE printer List ALL the references that you use including references for any spectra that you find Attach ALL the experimental spectra and the literature spectra to your report Remember that the process of discussing and writing this report will enhance your understanding of the material you have learned in 30AL In other words understanding the logic and theory of this report will help you prepare for the final exam All members of the group should be involved in preparing or reviewing drafts of the various sections of the report Written Report Format I Authors List the names and responsibilities of all the group members in writing the soil report and during the soil experiment II The unknown soil number III Abstract Outline the goal s of the soil project Summarize all results as well as outline all the techniques including identifications purification and isolation that you used that allow you to achieve such goal s IV Design of the Experimental Analysis Construct a SIMPLIFIED FLOWCHART as an OVERVIEW for the entire soil project The experimental design must consider how your group reasoned through an analytical scheme for which the detection of each of the compound can be determined both qualitatively and quantitatively by mass relative to the total amount of soil in the unknown in the unknown soil sample The methods must be reasonable and give the results desired or results that will lead to other analytical procedures V Results of the QUALITATIVE analysis Summarize the qualitative results and describe the identification purification isolation techniques that were used in the analysis Explain how your group concluded the identities of the compounds based on the various spectral analysis TLC results and or analytical tests VI Results of the QUANTITATIVE analysis Include DATA and ERROR Analysis Summarize all the quantitative results Provide the quantitative reasoning logic for each compound i e Data Analysis Calculate the by mass relative to the soil for EACH confirmed compound in the unknown Show ALL your work Discuss errors and estimation of uncertainty of the answers Show your calculations Note your previous post labs in 30AL and 20L will be good sources of references for error analysis VII Conclusions Summarize the results Comment on any uncertainties or experimental errors in procedures that may affect the results VIII Experimental and Literature Spectra For EACH of the ORGANIC compound in your unknown you MUST provide both the experimental spectra IR UV and or mass spec as well as the literature spectra as evidence for identifying the organic compounds For EACH INORGANIC COMPOUND you MUST show evidence from the results of the analytical tests that you did in the project to conclude the identity of the compound You may also include UV spectra for the inorganic compounds Attach ALL experimental AND literature spectra Label EACH spectrum clearly and write down the final experimental result s that your group concludes from EACH spectrum Attach ALL experimental TLC plates that you did in the project For EACH TLC plate write down the COMPONENTS OF MOBILE PHASE that was used for the separation as well as the compounds on the plates You can tape all the TLC plates on a piece of paper and attached that page to the report IX References Cite ALL the references that you use in this report including any on line resources Make sure you read the Library handouts provided by Marion Peters on how to cite references appropriately Oral Report Format The oral presentations will be evaluated by both the TA and Dr Russell There may be other evaluators present The oral presentation is graded individually The individual grade for each person will be based on the accuracy of his or her presentation the organization of that portion of the presentation his or her respect for the other members of the group his or her respect for the audience and the timeliness of this portion of the presentation I Materials Equipment available in labs for the presentation White board Over head projector 6 transparencies may be obtained group from Dr Russell Cable interface for laptop computer to TV You are responsible for testing that your laptop will support this presentation format during one of the experimental periods of the assignment No testing will be allowed during the presentation periods Your group may also wish to use posters for the presentations to enhance the visual effect You are responsible for the supplies for any posters II Structure of the presentation Each group has a maximum of15 minutes to present their project When presenting the soil project please keep in mind the following items Each group MUST present an overall procedural structure in FLOWCHART format of the entire project including the UNKNOWN SOIL NUMBER discuss or explain the methods used whether they gave positive or negative results in the project and the logics behind the procedures report the BY MASS AS WELL AS THE UNCERTAINTY for each compound present in the soil sample remember that they don t really add up to 100 show the literature as well as experimental spectra used to identify compounds For this part you can simply show the paper copies of the spectra to the whole class or copy the spectra onto transparencies keep their presentation within the 15 minute time limit Each member of the group MUST understand the concepts behind all parts of the project i e know the real chemistry present a significant portion of the project In other words no member should simply report values or give introduction or give
