Chemistry 30AL Library assignment (PART 2) Post-lab Guidelines Post-lab must be written inside your lab notebook There is no pre-lab for the library assignment Obtain the following information for your assigned compound: Chemical formula, molecular structure, molecular weight, physical state (i.e. solid, liquid or gas) of the compound at ROOM TEMPERATURE, color of the compound, melting point and/or boiling point, solubility properties, spectra (IR, MS, NMR, UV-vis) and CAS# (Chemical Abstract Service Registry Number). All the above information can be looked up either from the Chemistry library (4238 Young) or through the Internet. Refer to the lecture handouts provided by Marion Peter for more details on the various chemical resources that will help you to find all the required information for your compound. Another EXCELLENT web site (in addition to the one listed on the lecture handouts) for spectra is: www.cschemfinder.com Do a search of a specific compound. From the search, there should be a link to the NIST Chemistry WebBook for the compound being searched. Go to that link and you can download the spectra that are available for that compound. IMPORTANT: NOT all compounds will have the 4 spectra listed above (especially the inorganic ones). All references should be given. Even if spectra can not be obtained for a compound, the books or references searched should still be listed. References should include: title, author, editor (if any), edition, publisher, volume (if any) and page numbers If you use the Internet to find the information, you MUST print out all the information and attach them to your post-lab
