CHEMISTRY 30AL FALL 2002 SOIL ANALYSIS PROJECT- POST-LAB REPORT GUIDELINE This is a GROUP report. Due date: Turn in the group soil report to your teaching assistant on 12/5 & 12/6 (depending on the day of the lab) LATE SOIL POST-LAB WILL NOT BE ACCEPTED. NO EXCEPTION. Your group report should address the following points. The report must be in a well written format. You MUST list ALL the references that you use including references for any spectra that you find. Attached all the experimental spectra to your report!! Your group may submit a typewritten post-lab report for your soil project. Remember that during the process of writing this report will also provide you an understanding of the materials you have learned so far in 30AL. In other words, understanding the logic and theories of this report will help you to prepare for the final exam. Soil Post-lab Report Format (I) List the names and responsibilities of all the group members in writing the soil report and during the soil experiment. (II) The unknown soil number (III) Abstract - outline the goal(s) of the soil project. Summarize all results as well as outline all the techniques (including identifications, purification and isolation) that you used that allow you to achieve such goal(s).CHEMISTRY 30AL FALL 2002 SOIL ANALYSIS PROJECT- POSTLAB REPORT GUIDELINE This is a GROUP report (IV) Design of the Experimental Analysis There are three to four possible compounds(out of the five possible compounds - see below) in each of the unknown soil sample: Cobalt Sulfate, Nickel Chloride, Biphenyl, m-Nitroaniline and Benzoic acid (i) Construct a SIMPLIFIED FLOWCHART as an OVERVIEW for the entire soil project. (ii) The experimental design must consider how your group reasoned through an analytical scheme for which the detection of each of the compound can be determined both qualitatively and quantitatively (% by mass relative to the total amount of soil in the unknown) in the unknown soil sample. The methods must be reasonable and give the results desired or results that will lead to other analytical procedures. (V) RESULTS OF THE QUALITATIVE ANALYSIS Summarize all the qualitative results and gives descriptions of the identification / purification / isolation techniques that were used in the analysis. (VI) Results of the QUANTITATIVE analysis - including DATA & Error Analysis (a) Summarize all the quantitative results (b) Logic of quantitative reasoning for each compound (i.e. Data Analysis) Calculate the % by mass relative to the soil for EACH confirm compound in the unknown. (c) Discussions of error and estimation of uncertainty of the answers (Show all your calculations) (VII) Conclusions(a) Summarize the results (b) Comment on any uncertainties or experimental errors in procedures that may affect the results.CHEMISTRY 30AL FALL 2002 SOIL ANALYSIS PROJECT- POSTLAB REPORT GUIDELINE This is a GROUP report (VIII) Experimental & Literature Spectra For EACH compound in your unknown, you MUST provide both the experimental spectra (IR,UV and/or mass spec.) as well as the literature spectra. Attach ALL the experimental AND literature spectra. Label EACH spectrum clearly and write down the final experimental result(s) that your group concludes from EACH spectrum. (IX) References Site ALL the references that you use in this report (including any on-line resources) Make sure you read the Library handouts provided by Marion Peters on how to cite references
