Slattery SEAL I Introduction The National Government is a semester long survey of the American National Government system It comprises an introductory study of the U S constitutional framework the role and context of American Politics and the individuals groups that directly and indirectly influence the American political process The second half of the study concentrates on the examination of U S Government institutions and their role in formulating American public policy II General Course Objectives A Acquire a basic knowledge and stimulate interest in the American political system its political process within America s social context and its constitutional framework B Examine the Federal Government s system and its institutions including the Congress the Presidency the Federal Bureaucracy and the Courts C Analyze the role of government in the formulation of domestic and foreign policy D Develop and reinforce basic college level reading writing and verbal skills and critical thinking through logical and reasoned analysis of assigned readings and through clear and concise discussion during class participation a short research paper and exams essays III Exams and Grading Criteria A Total GRADE Points Meaningful Class Participation Assigned Learning Objectives class discussion prep contribution attendance Quizzes Test I key terms Part I See Test question examples para VII Mid term Exam Parts I and II of Text Test II key terms Part III Student Research Paper RP 8 10 written pages See paragraph VIII on page 11 for RP details Final Exam Parts I II III IV Total 100 presented in context with the Part s Learning Objectives will be administered after each major section Part The main objective of the Quiz will be to help prepare the student for the upcoming test or exam by identifying areas where more study and preparation may be required Tests I II will also focus only on Key Terms and will be administered at the end of Parts I III respectively The Midterm Exam and Final Exam will be administered at the end of Parts II IV respectively Each of these major exams will be cumulative and also include essay questions in addition to Key Terms They will cover all Slattery SEAL IV Attendance and Participation Complete attendance is strongly encouraged 10 of your grade is based on your preparation for and participation in class discussions Class discussions will highlight significant key terms and learning objectives and clarify potential tested material by asking questions and seeking thoughtful student responses to them Some questions may be open ended without necessarily a correct answer to them only a well reasoned and argued one One of the major objectives of the course is to promote critical thinking To that end diverse views are encouraged and occasionally the instructor may act as devil s advocate to promote debate challenge widely held assumptions and encourage critical analysis of popularly accepted views Student Notes Power point pp notes similar to those used by the instructor during class presentations are available to the student for downloading off the instructor s web page or off the studentassistant computer located in DRich room 113 Recommend that each Chapter s pp notes be downloaded and printed off prior to the scheduled class These student class notes may be used as a study guide in preparation for class discussions and exam preparation They may also be useful for student annotation of personal notes taken during class discussions and as a vehicle to answer questions posed by the instructor in context with the learning objectives Sorry NO COMPUTER NOTEBOOKS ARE ALLOWED DURING CLASS In the past they have proven to be more of a distraction than a help to prior students Note Students with documented disabilities who desire modifications or accommodations should contact the office of Student Support Services located in the University s Hight House All students are subject to the academic integrity
