Metabolism• Metabolism is the sum total of all of the chemical reactions that occur within a cell, and is comprised of two components:- Catabolism, are those chemical reactions that are degradative in function, and are generally regarded as carbon consuming and energy generating- Anabolism, are those chemical reactions that are building in function, i.e., carbon generating, and require an expenditure ofenergy. Anabolic reactions are also know as biosynthetic reactions.Metabolism of GlucoseC6H12O6+ 6 O2----> 6 CO2+ 6 H2O + energyRespiration: a metabolic process in which an organic molecule serves as the primary electron donor (carbon and energy source) and an inorganic molecule serves as the terminal electron acceptor.• If O2 is terminal electron acceptor metabolism is called AEROBIC RESPIRATIONGLYCOLYSIS – In DetailGlucose -----> 2 pyruvates + 4 ATPs + 2 NADHsNet 2 ATPs by Substrate Level PhosphorylationLINKING STEP LINKS GLYCOLYSIS TO KREBS
