Study Guide for Reading Notes 8 How can we introduce children to a literacy center activity to help ensure their independent success with the activity To make sure the children are successful at an independent activity the teacher can first give a demonstration or some sort of instructions of how to do it before sending the students off to do it on their own Based on the reading what are 3 valuable options for literacy activities during independent literacy practice time Describe each option as well as what students and the teacher are doing during each Options for Independent What are students Work Time doing 1 The teacher begins his or her lessons by showing Teacher explanation and and explaining to their modeling children what they expect and what they want to see them doing What is the teacher doing at this time During all of this the teacher is engaged wit the students working actively with them to make sure they understand the procedures that are being introduced to them 2 The teacher guides the students in making the transitions between the table and their seat several times throughout the time period Guided Practice The students work in small group lessons and also on independent work 3 Independent Practice The students can now read on their own and are called up to the teacher in groups to have time with their instructor During this point the teacher is working with small groups while the rest of the class reads independently Imagine that you are beginning your year as a teacher of kindergarten first or second grade You want to introduce your children to 2 independent literacy centers with at least two activity options in each during the second or third week of school Looking over the literacy centers and activities described on Table 7 1 on pp 174 175 describe two centers you would want to set up and the two activities you would include in each center to get your children into the routine of literacy centers and to give them some practice with the literacy skills they are learning I would want to set up a vocabulary center and a writing center In the vocabulary center my kids would match words to student friendly definitions illustrate vocab words play memory games with pairs of antonym word cards In the writing center my kids would add to ongoing pieces of personal writing pairs swap drafts read and circle words that may be misspelled students practice previously taught letter forms
