Reading Notes 7 What is the overarching purpose of small group reading instruction The main purpose would be to help the children to advance by placing them in groups that have children in the who are around the same skill level Where does this fit into the Literacy Instruction Framework See inside cover of textbook for overview of framework It fits in into the category of differential instruction What are the main components or instructional activities involved in differentiated small group reading lessons Some of the main activities and components are screening assessments progress monitoring assessments and diagnostic assessments When focusing on reading comprehension what are the primary steps in a small group reading lesson before reading 1 Bring students attention to the word by pronouncing the word showing it to them in the text section And reading the sentence that contains the word aloud to the students 2 Provide a quick meaningful explanation and an example or two of the words meaning 3 Invite students to use the word in a meaningful sentence during reading Teachers typically teach comprehension strategies clarification and questions to generate thought after reading The time to type all the information together and sure that students understand the text content The most common way of doing this is summarizing passage content What strategies can teachers use to build students reading fluency Name three and briefly describe each Students listen to the recorded books on tape or CD while following along with a print copy of text at listening center Students partner read a decodable or leveled text to each other Student groups practice or her sing a readers theater script and then perform the script for the rest of the class Terms Screening assessment and assessment given early in the school year to identify students or likely to have problems learning to read it so that instructional interventions maybe provided Progress monitoring assessment assessments that are given frequently throughout the school year to show how quickly students are progressing in reading Diagnostic assessments the process of looking very closely at various aspects of students reading such as phonemic awareness site word recognition level oral reading accuracy and reading comprehension to identify specific reading strengths and needs Graphic organizer A visual organizer such as A map web charts or diagram that shows relationships Reading fluency Reading with sufficient speed accuracy and expression so that readers can devote most of their attention comprehension of the text
