Read 399 Freedson Fall 2011 Recommended Outline for Child Assessment Paper If your child is able to choose a book to read on his or her own 1 Introduction Provide a brief introduction to the purpose of the paper the child and the procedures you used to assess the child Remember do NOT use the child s real name 2 Reading interests attitudes and practices approx 1 page present results of your interview 3 Informal Reading Conference results a Book selection Describe how child selected book how difficult the child believes the book to be for him or her and provide a brief over of the book including the title author genre and 1 or 2 sentence summary If the child has already read some of the book and can summarize it for you in her own words all the better b Oral Reading In this section explain which portion of the book the child read aloud and describe his or her oral reading using the Sight Word and Decoding skills checklist remember you don t have to assess Spelling or writing Be sure to discuss the child s word identification and decoding skills highlighting those things the child does well before discussing things that cause difficulty Be specific and give examples of the child s errors looking for any patterns In addition discuss the child s self monitoring and reading fluency see Smith Read chapter on Small Group Differentiated Instruction for more info on fluency as per the checklist If there were any difficult vocabulary words Tier 2 or Tier 3 words you asked the child to define discuss that here as well you can discuss vocabulary in the following section as well if you think it fits better there Vocabulary is after all strongly related to comprehension c Comprehension Discuss your assessment of the child s comprehension using the Questions to Probe for Understanding as a guide Be sure to include a few specific examples of things the child said in response to some of your questions d Conference conclusion Discuss the remaining portions of the Reading Conference the child s strengths and goals from both his her perspective and your own and how long the child thinks it will take him her to complete the book 4 Final reflections In one detailed and analytical paragraph reflect on what you learned about reading development and reading assessment from doing this assignment Read 399 Freedson Fall 2011 If your child is not yet reading on his or her own a kindergartner 1 Introduction Provide a brief introduction to the purpose of the paper the child and the procedures you used to assess the child Remember do NOT use the child s real name 2 Reading interests attitudes and practices approx 1 page present results of your interview 3 Informal Reading Conference results a Book selection Describe how the read aloud book was selected by you or the child and provide a brief over of the book including the title author genre and 1 or 2 sentence summary b Comprehension Discuss your assessment of the child s comprehension using the Questions to Probe for Understanding as a guide Be sure to include a few specific examples of things the child said in response to some of your questions Of course your discussion must be based on the child s listening rather than reading comprehension c Assessment of Alphabet Knowledge and Emergent Literacy Behaviors Checklist d Conference conclusion Discuss the child s strengths and goals Since the child is so young and not yet reading independently this discussion should be primarily from your own perspective You are welcome to ask the child what he she thinks as well 4 Final reflections In one detailed and analytical paragraph reflect on what you learned about reading development and reading assessment from doing this assignment
