Intelligent Design in the Science Classroom Why Science and Evolution Science and religion Creation science Devised by opponents of evolution to communicate their teachings in the guise of scientific study For many people evolution represents a threat to their belief in the sudden creation of all life by a creator Creation science is not supported by factual evidence Brief History Scopes v State of Tennessee 1925 Butler Act banned the teaching of evolution in Tennessee public schools ACLU convinced high school teacher John Scopes to be arrested and tried for teaching evolution Scopes was convicted and the ruling was upheld by the Tennessee Supreme Court Teaching evolution was illegal in Tennessee until 1967 Theories banning the teaching of evolution were struck down in 1968 by the Supreme Court in Epperson v Arkansas Cobb County Georgia 2002 Science and Evolution Science and religion Intelligent design An approach stressing the idea that the biological world was created by an intelligent entity although God is not generally specified directly as the creator Tries to divorce intelligent design for objections regarding the establishment of religion under the First Amendment Basic concept is that there are certain characteristics of biological organisms that are too complex to explain through natural selection McLean v Arkansas Board of Education 1982 Balanced Treatment for Creation Science and Evolution Science Act In 1987 the Supreme Court decided in Edwards v Aguillard that equal time laws violated the establishment clause of First Amendment to the Constitution 1996 Tennessee debated and narrowly defeated a bill that would have made teachers who taught evolution as a fact rather than a theory subject to dismissal for insubordination 2 7 2014 1 Darwin s Theory Gallup Poll Nov 7 10 2004 N 1 016 adults nationwide Just your opinion Do you think that Charles Darwin s theory of evolution is a scientific theory that has been well supported by evidence or just one of many theories and one that has not been well supported by evidence or don t you know enough about it to say 45 40 35 30 25 20 15 10 5 0 Well Supported Not Well Supported Don t Know Enough 2001 2004 35 35 39 35 25 29 2005 Kitzmiller v Dover We find that ID fails on three different levels any one of which is sufficient to preclude a determination that ID is science They are ID violates the centuries old ground rules of science by invoking and permitting supernatural causation the argument of irreducible complexity central to ID employs the same flawed and illogical contrived dualism that doomed creation science in the 1980 s and ID s negative attacks on evolution have been refuted by the scientific community Kitzmiller v Dover the fact that a scientific theory cannot yet render an explanation on every point should not be used as a pretext to thrust an untestable alternative hypothesis grounded in religion into the science classroom or to misrepresent well established scientific propositions Judge John Jones Science Survey KS vs NC Demographics What is Science Age Employment Kansas 100 00 80 00 60 00 40 00 20 00 0 00 100 00 80 00 60 00 40 00 20 00 0 00 1 2 8 9 5 9 to prove a theory and or hypothesis An attempt to better understand the world around us through systematic testing and measurement Science is the explaining and proving of how elements make up life exist Science is studying and testing theories A combination of mathematics learning and processes Science enables us to better understand the world around us by making observations and analyzing those observations through data and calculation Science is the way that the universe and everything in it works science is everything It is the study of things and how they work came to be and what they will be study of everything non religious a subject 2 7 2014 2 What is Science North Carolina Science is the study of life and everything that allows it to function The pursuit of knowledge of the natural world using objective methods Science is a field of study that in essence serves to explain life as we know it It encompasses various fields physics chemistry biology ecology etc that all function to give an explanation for all forms and parts of life as well as non living things It is transcendent It is the face of curiosity and yearning and learning Science is all around us it cannot be denied The study of Earth s natural forces and specimens Science is a practice defined but not limited to the scientific method by which experiments are planned and conducted to suit research and practical needs and the term science may also apply to the problems themselves though they may lack observable evidence or means of gathering this evidence for example the study of black holes and the edge of the observable Universe still fall under science Observing things with the intention of determining their function and potential purpose and being able to replicate these processes through experiment Well I know that science comes from the Latin word scientia meaning knowledge Therefore to me science is a process of the of trying to gain knowledge of the world around us as a human species for all things that can be tested thus nothing that is supernatural by definition Do You Like Science Do you like science 1 4 9 2 0 0 5 2 1 7 0 1 2 5 9 0 3 9 8 5 5 2 6 8 7 1 0 0 0 4 5 1 1 0 0 physical universe by applying the principles of the scientific method process which includes making empirical observations proposing hypotheses to explain those observations and testing those hypotheses in valid and reliable ways Also refers to the organized body of knowledge that results from scientific study A way of knowing Do you like science Why or why not I do to an extent Science is interesting when a new medical breakthrough or information explains …
