Public Speaking: Presentational Aids- 3 is the magic number for public speaking- If you are doing audio, make sure you bring speakerso Laptop is not loud enough for an audienceo Don’t have a long audio file  No more than 15-20 seconds- Videoso Don’t rely on just using YouTube video Download the videoo Make sure to project the video, don’t show the video off your laptop (it’s too small)o Short as possible- Posterso Only use posters when it is a “poster presentation session” A huge room when everyone has their poster and is showing other peopleo Video: Poster Speech The student is good but the instructions are bad. Posters are not a good idea, don’t buy it, and don’t use it.- Photographso Always project it on a big screen so the audience can see it clearlyo Has to be something that truly clarifies what you are talking abouto People will understand you and remember your messageo Only use pictures when you absolutely need themo Want to brighten the picture if its darko Make sure it’s worth a thousand words- PowerPointo When you use bullets, your notes are on your PowerPoint Not good - Handoutso Have a life longer than your speecho Rules 1. Make sure everyone has one 2. Think about how to distribute the handouts- Large audiences are more difficult 3. Make handout presentation as personal as possible- Hand the handout to them personally 4. Make sure they are appropriate size- At least a quarter size of American size paper 5. Make sure it is good paper- Shows you care- Color is also nice- Propso Can be a strong presentational aid, better than a pictureo Big enough for the audience to seeo Don’t bring too many propso Only use them when they are absolutely necessaryo Hide them until its necessary o And put it away when you aren’t using it- Live modelso Can be great but can also kill your speecho Don’t use a random person from the audience Use a friend that has practiced with you before- Animalso Don’t bring in a snake, a picture is just fineo Also don’t bring in a frogo Animals do unpredictable things and go places they aren’t supposed to doo Never use a live animal because you never know what they are going to doo Sometimes if the animal is cute, they might steal the show because they are cuter than we
