Police officers are exalted by some and vilified by othersIntroPersonal experience with cops, how they did not do their job properly. The area that I grew up in was associated with crime, and inadvertently the behavior of cops in my area further socialized me to hate the police.Police are loved by some and hated by others. Regardless of ones bias towards or against the cops, one can clearly see that public opinion concerning the police is extremely divided and polarized towards two radically separate sides of the spectrum. ThesisThis dichotomy in public opinion is caused by the unequal policing of race, unequal policing of socioeconomic class, and popular media portrayal of both cops and criminals alike.Should I include the history that these inequalities stem from? Or should I avoid this and get to the meat of things? Is the war on drugs kind of a stretch to put in this essay?Paragraph 1The divisiveness of public opinion concerning cops is a direct result of racially biased enforcement that stem from post slavery politics and more recently, the war on drugsLecture: 3-29-19 war on drugs – entrenchment of the racial caste system, 80% are consumers not dealersCourse media: War on drugs is a huge failureVISUALIZING POLICE EXPOSURE BY RACE GENDER AND AGE – crime and deviance more infoCourse media: White nationalist groups are actually gangs – need to systematically monitor their violence; just as important in monitoring minority group gang violence.Lecture: Crime and Deviance – people of color are over represented as criminalsCourse media: stealing black peoples timeConclusion: the unequal policing of race has made blacks (understandingly) abhor and fear police. Ratherthan serve the entire community, the police primarily serve the white community and are much more punishing towards people of color in terms of severity of enforcement and sheer quantity of suspection. Paragraph 2Not only does race play a factor, policing is also biased towards socioeconomic status. Poorer members of society reflect a worse opinion of cops in comparison to members of higher socioeconomic status because they are punished much harder by simply being poor.Course media: redlining districts and policingPoor districts are generally more policed, and even when rich people are targeted, the complications of fees and court treatment are not as nearly detrimental to their lives Course media- rich people buy their way out of jailCourse media- why it might be time to rethink the rules of paroleConclusion: crime policies and policing of individuals impact poor individual’s lives disproportionately from rich individuals.Positionality: as a member of a poor area, I could see first hand the effects of policing on my community. Primarily on black individuals.PARAGRAPH 3Media portrayal of policing has skewed public opinion.Crime and deviance- more info 1st oneThrough the bipartisanship of media Course media about bipartisanship in media criminals are misrepresented (fox n stuff showing scary black people all the time) and crime is essentialized. White collar crime is not reported on nearly as often or opinionized. Blue collar crime is usually committed by poor individuals and are over represented by black individuals within the socioeconomic class of poor.INTERSECTIONALITY: black and poor suffer more than just socioeconomically disadvantaged people. Evenfurther, black women are often not even represented in media and their grievances towards the police are rarely acknowledgedConclusion:The divide of public opinion existed way beforehand through historically unfair practices but is now greater than ever before because of the compounding effect that social media and popular media platforms have through framing. Framing of violence as a minority issue and socioeconomically disadvantaged issue. A proposed solution is to fix the radicalizing frame of crime in media, while simultaneously introducing rehabilitative options for prison instead of outdated retributive practices.Should I only post rehabilitative sources in this conclusion for the solution? How would I weave the benefits of a rehabilitative prison system throughout my
