GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.-Reagan's shutdown on the voice of workers underscored his ignorance of the plight of theworking class Examining the "Live Music Capital of the World" -Clearly shows De Facto segregation that is highly socially enforced -Racial restrictions prohibited blacks and sometimes Mexican Americans from buying property outside of East Austin 1928: A Beautification plan for Austin-Essentially tried to facilitate segregation more deeply in the infrastructure of the city, tried to make the center of the city primarily white and the east side for people of color -Not forcing anyone to live somewhere specific, but removing infrastructure that could facilitate integration-Recommended all heavy industry to be moved to east Austin so that all those kinds of blue collar jobs and individuals to be out of the city A City Divider: I-35The 1928 plan determined that people of color should live east of the highway and Anglos shouldlive west of the highway-Initiates closure of all schools and public services for African Americans on the West sideand a variation of those schools and public services appears on the east side-1937 Housing act: advocates for funding for low-income housing (Models Public Housing for the rest of the nation) but they're only located on the east side; further forces low income, people of color to live on the East side 1956 Interstate Highway Act: funds for highways (like I-35), to facilitate traffic more efficiently and make it easier to travel from the suburbs (White Flight) -35 for example further segregates the city (happens in other cities too); makes a physical divide 1956 City Plan: expands east Austin industrial zone -Legislation is enacted so that permits can't be obtained to make improvements on the houses Mapping Austin's "Progressive Country Music" -Many traditional Austin music venues are segregated but are slowly moving forward-Black and Mexican musical spheres develop separately Armadillo Headquarters -> Willie Nelson Cosmic Cowboys, Punks and Austin Development-Retro/ rebel music and Austin urbanization-Nonconformity as a commodity-Popular representation and historiography -Emerging at the same time as disco Making sense of a "Sunbelt" City-Texas oil boom concurrent with national recession; Austin benefits-Dam/ public works/ engineering/ military projects-Available land for development-Smaller pools of organized labor-Recruitment of tech companiesMedia export: Willie nelson Representing Austin by broadcasting ACL-Adapts the slogan "Live Music Capital of the
