He’s gay (not federally recognized. He’s a journalist (there are other journalists in USA). Not specialized job. He would have to go back to Philippines, and then wait 10 years to apply to USA legally. He doesn’t know anyone in the Philippines either. o In 2012 they were processing people who applied for green cards in 1989 – expedited status The Dream Act Overview: o 2001 o For undocumented people under 21 o Graduated HS o Resided in US for at least 5 years o Bill never passes, stalled in congress o Obama: wants to halt deportation of Dream Act eligible youth & provide them with work permits o Obama want dreamers to become legal residents o And the confusion>>o Many Republicans – sharp anti-immigration (changing opinion now)o BUT Obama – ramped up deportations (more than George W. Bush) Why did Vargas get drivers license if he knew it was illegal? o It’s pretty much required to work and go to school in USA (needed o Washington State – says he lives there, gets his license so he can go to work o Repercussion – Washington State said he can’t have one there because he didn’t live in Washington State – that was all Do undocumented people in the US pay taxes?o Yes, off their income o Buy fake social security card (appears they are illegal) pay state and federal taxes o The numbers come from people who are deadTwo Strict Immigration Laws to Know o SB 1070 o Arizona’s “Show me your papers” law o If you look like you might be from another country, you could be asked to show your papers in Arizona o If you can’t show your papers, you can be called into police station o Pros: get rid of illegal immigrants o Cons: who carries their papers around with them all the time, racial profiling/discriminationo US is only so big and we can only afford to help so many people o Not fair for all the immigrants that went through the process legally o Sometimes immigrants feel they have no choice – to survive, the best for their children and lives, not trying to rip off Americans o Affects our economy because immigrants work for far less money – food industry(less desirable jobs) keeps food prices down, if you get rid of those people prices will go up o History is about immigration o Why did people come? Economy in America was prospering and we needed people to fill jobs o HB 56 – Alabama’s PS gather immigration stats o Elementary school teachers reporting students from undocumented families o Pros: student could be taking seats from American students in the school districto Cons: innocents kids being targeted, putting a lot of pressure on teachers – state employees (have to do what states tells them), takes away from teacher student relationship, teacher’s job to protect and educate children (going against it)o Right as an American to challenge the law, also your right not to agree with it How do most illegal immigrants enter the US?o Come on temporary visas and then never leave (most common) – visitor, worker visa o #1 way is student visa What’s a mixed status family?o Some family are illegal and some are not What’s DACA?o Differed Action for Childhood Arrivals o Way to let children who came young as illegal, allowed to stay and work *Immigration demonstrates the political shifting lineSpectrum: very liberal democrats, less liberal democrats, centrist, less conservative republicans, very conservative republicans (tea party) Left – liberals (Obama)Right – republicans GOP – Republicans (Grand Old Party) *The center is always shifting like a game of tug o’ war. Person attends college or serves in the US military What’s going on now with immigration? o One-sided views o Bill to continue funding for Department of Homeland Security o Democrats led them to put on attachment piece that would put amnesty for dreamerso Last week threat DHS was going to be shut down o Fox News (conservative view) o Interviewing Republicans o MSNBC (liberal view) o Interviewing Democrats Where they stand…Deporting the Undocumented >pg 13 of article o Obama (Democrat) say yes to DACA o Republicans say no to DACA Some republicans want a path to citizenship, or guest worker system (Rubio) This is causing potentially politically dangerous divide in the Republican Party The Republican Divide o Republicans have been divided on the immigration for nearly a decade with centrists and business interest favoring broad fixeso But grassroots conservatives and populists opposing even current levels of immigration But GOP lawmakers and party strategists of all stripes agree on this much: o Obama has made the issue irreversibly toxic. o They contend that the president’s executive order, announced in November, to legalize and offer work permits to 4.1 million illegal immigrants killed any change that existed for an overhaul to move forward this year in the Republican Congress o Even Republican members who back liberal immigration policies argue that Obama’s move was unconstitutional Holding our Security Hostage o Funding to DHS was tangles up with the immigration bill o Funding for DHS was expanded for just 1 week on Friday 2/27 o Everyone was playing hardball and no side was willing to give in o 3/3 House Speaker John Boehner (R) has announced that the House will vote Tuesday on a "clean" bill to fund the Department of Homeland Security through the rest
