Ugc 211 1st Edition Lecture 12Current LectureImmigration Continued Further…30 Days Film - Frank George (Cuban) – protests illegal immigrants from Mexico - 7 years old fled from Cuban Revolution to US – came legally to US - Been through experience of losing a country - Believes illegal immigrants need to be deported - More than a million illegal immigrants try to cross the border - He works at the border with his wife, have rifles on them – minutemen - Minutemen report any illegal crossings - Says illegal crossing will bring the dissolution of the country - Frank is staying with the Gonzalez family (illegal family) – some are legal and some aren’t, come from small town in central Mexico, now live in small apartment - Wife talking about covering the American flag with the Mexican flag – makes her mad - Three rules: He has to leave all personal id behind, move with family of illegal immigrants in small apartment, and work as a day laborer - Opportunity to present to the American people the huge problem - Concerned about how they might perceive him - Uneasiness between all of them when they first met - Frank completely against amnesty - Frank abides by the laws, he would deport the family tomorrow if he could - Roberto works as handyman in neighborhood to support his family, survives on less than $15,000 per year – exploited, working for less money - Lose countries by force - Frank says he is a citizen of this country and took an oath to protect it - Nation is known for the American Dream – young girl in family says - Girl wants to go to Princeton College, has a 3.8 GPA - Frank says the Mexican Government failed them - Frank exploded and went off at a restaurant discussing immigration problem- She made $49 on returning cans since January – saving up - Frank sees how passionate and caring the mother is - Frank says their warm people, aspect of family, and starting to get along well - Goes on golf lesson – girl and Frank - Denied to Princeton – very sad about it - Haven’t seen their family in Mexico in 12 years – Patty’s parents died - If they go back to Mexico, they know they won’t be able to come back - Frank remembers when his mom couldn’t go back to Cuba to care for his mother - He feels bad that the illegal immigrant family can’t go back and visit his family - Frank goes to visit Mario (Rigoberto’s brother)- Home was very dirty - Mario says Rigoberto was forced to go to the US because he barely made any pesos in Mexico to support his family – he didn’t want to go - The way they used to live was terrible, no bathroom, lived on ground floor, barely any shelter, not a place for a home, got water from a well - Frank can’t believe the conditions that they were living in, feels awful and sees now why the girl wants to go to college and work hard - Frank starts looking and feeling conflicted about the immigration dilemma - Girl doesn’t have pictures of her grandparents and slightly remembers what they look like - Frank came back with a video of their family - Lizard they found while working – younger your first instinct is to kill an animal like that but then you learn to appreciate life as you grow up - Family thinks that Frank has changed, doesn’t feel as strong in his beliefs as he did before- He walked away with another perspective of human beings - Girl got into college - Frank is going to miss all the family - Saying goodbye is really hard - “There comes a time where you love people for who they are, all politics aside” – Frank - Frank remains a minuteman - Armita (girl) goes to a local college Discussion - Patty (mom) – can’t go back to Mexico to see her mother or father before they died, wouldn’t get back into US, saved can money for Christmas gifts $49 and said it was going to be a great Christmas this year - Rigoberto (dad) – handyman, do anything to make money, crawl under scary space - Armita (daughter) – wants to go to college, really smart, well-spoken, wants to pursue American Dream - Scene when Frank goes to Mexico – has so much empathy at their horrendous situation, double bind – if they come to US they are undocumented, illegal, facing all these roadblocks, but if they stay in Mexico they surely would have died. - Frank is all about the laws - Jobs are being outsourced to other countries where they don’t have to pay people as much.
