White and Ella Shepard.-Fisk University was founded in January 1866.-The annual tuition at Fisk in the 1860’s was 12 dollars a year. -Fisk University was founded to provide an education to all Americans regardless of race.-The Fisk Jubilee Singers were created to perform and raise money for the school because it was debt-ridden.-The American Missionary Association (AMA) helped aid education for freedom. They impacted the development of the Fisk Jubilee Singers by taking money from there funds to fight off their own bankruptcy. -Spirituals are also known as Cannon songs and Plantation Melodies. -Other institutions that founded singing groups for similar reasons were Fayetteville and Hampton.-The repertoire for the Fisk Jubilee Singers was a classical tradition rather than folk.-The Fisk Jubilee Singers were different from the traditional African American singing because they sang to make money for education, rather than expression or enjoyment.-To help promote the groups performances the singers would go around knocking on doors and begin singing popular songs.-The Fisk Jubilee Singers were more popular outside the U.S. The singers sailed across seas and sang for Queen Victoria. They then became very popular among Dukes and Duchesses. Many people said they had a Victorian style.-The Freedman’s Bureau were rights given to free African American slaves.-The HBCU was the Historically Black Colleges and Universities.
