The Power of Metis- Ouranos: stuffed his children back up Gaia’s birth canal- Cronus (Kronos): ate his childreno tried to rule with “brute force”- Zeus comes to power and maintains it by intelligence- Hesiod: “Rhea hatched Metis”o Rhea started something aside from brute forceo Metis: clever, intelligent, shrewdo Zeus realized he needed alliance and sought out Metis for help Prometheus insisted that intelligence would wino together, Zeus and Metis freed the hundred handed giants- Cyclopes: thunderbolts- Titaness, Metis: emetic- Cronus ignored Prometheus’ prediction: “Victory will go to him who tried to win, not by force, but y ruse.”- Rhea and Metis- Zeus and Metis: emetic- Zeus and Prometheuso Zeus got mad at Prometheus because he taught the humans how to beneficially use fire and how to be more confident, so Zeus sent his henchmen, Power and Force, and Hephaestus, and they took Prometheus to Scythia where they put himto a rock with “adamantine steel” to torture him- Zeus and Metioeis (counselor)- Cf. David and Goliath- Zeus threatened Io into a relationship and visited her as a dark cloud to hide from his wife, Hera, who eventually became suspicious, and then Zeus transformed Io into a cow- then Hera saw the beautiful white cow and wanted it as a pet; Hera put Argus (hundred-eyed monster) in charge of Io- Zeus felt bad for Io, so he sent Hermes to trick Argus with his deceitful speech, Argus fell asleep, and then Hermes let Io freeThese notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Knowledge that Alienates Gods and Men- the story of Prometheus and Zeus obviously represents tension between god and the creator of mankindo Prometheus is the instructor and benefactor of mankind (human beings)- In an event foreshadowing the Holocaust, Zeus demanded that the humans sacrifice the whole animal (everything); the gods loved the aroma of sacrifice; humans were giving alltheir food away and dying offo Prometheus told humans to sort meat and give the nasty leftovers disguised by a layer of fat to Zeus fire was a symbol of knowledge and self-sufficiency- Prometheus “sewed blind hopes in mankind”; humans became paralyzed with the vision of their own death, so he took away their vision of the futureo he was a divinity who carried out the actual designing of mankind by mixing together the elements again (formula for disaster) that suggests that humans were doomed from the start- Zeus sent the first human woman to do some damage (Pandora)- Herakles (son of Io and Zeus) came by, freed Prometheus, and then settled disputes- Gardeno EveIoo godHerakles- Archetype: human thinkinghope of reconciliation- archetype=redemption- baptism is a microcosmic version of the flood (new beginnings)- Ovid’s 4 stages parallel with Genesis in the Bibleo paradise is lost, humans grow more belligerent, giants reproduce, and cause rebellion against the gods, all until mankind is destroyed by flood4. Pandora: The Magical Woman- Hephaestus created her in his forge and all the gods came down and endowed her with all types of giftso pan=allo dora=gifts- gifts: smoothness of speech, beauty, womanly intelligence, certain walk, persuasiveness;then presented to mankind- Hermes leads men and women together- Pandora was given to a human being (Prometheus’s brother, Epimetheus) brought on the Battle of the Sexes brings distraction brings the ability to bear children super powero Prometheus means “forethought”o Epimetheus means “after thought” he took over mankind when Prometheus was chained up- Pandora was as effective as the tower of Babylono exercises a mysterious powero knees buckled as she walked byo she was manipulative; woman’s desire will be not for her husband but his place- the box is Pandora’s dowry (she wasn’t supposed to open); all these personification sprites exploded out of the box: these represent all the physical and mental ills that humans face (gout, Alzheimer’s, pride, and injustice); once opened, she slammed the lid shut thinking it was too late, except:o box: “woman’s womb” (womb brings all these things into the world), but as long as she has it, there’s hope that could put an end to all the evil in this
