C122 TRANSCRIPTION EXERCISE – 10 POINTSThis is an excerpt from an actual recording made by a C122 student in the past.Ordinarily you would need to make an effort to get down the exact words of all of the speakers, but in this case that work has already been done for you. The transcript below also shows who said what by using a different letter for each speaker, and I’ve marked words neither I nor the original transcriber could understand with “xxx” and placed uncertain passages in parentheses. (If you think you hear something other than what’s written here, feel free to correct it!)What you have here is mostly just the words. Your job is to turn this into a detailed transcript of the kind you’ll be asked to make for Fieldnotes I and Fieldnotes II. - Use the conventions on page 154 & 156 to mark up the transcript as accurately as you can, based on careful listening to the recording, which is available as an mp3 file on Oncourse. You should try to show vocal emphasis, lengthening, pauses, changes in volume, rapid speech, latching, interruptions, and overlap (people talking at the same time). Keep in mind that in some cases you may need to rearrange the order of lines.- Look at the sample transcript on pages 154-5 if you’re unsure how any of the conventions work in practice. In particular, observe that the [ sign for overlap (“simultaneous behavior”) goes between two numbered lines and shows where theoverlap starts.THINGS YOU MUST DO FOR FULL CREDIT:- Correctly format – include numbered lines, appropriate and consistent spacing and indentations (use the transcripts in the book for guidance).- Capitalize everything that needs capitalizing.- Supply proper punctuation. - Indicate where in the conversation C is laughing.- Indicate what words are emphasized.- Indicate where overlapping occurs.- Indicate significant pauses.- Indicate latched speech.- Indicate elongated words. You should find instances of each of these things in the audio file and be able to replicate them. I only need the second page with the corrected transcription. THIS MUST BE TURNED IN TO CLASS AS A HARD COPY OR EMAILED BEFORE CLASS STARTS – OTHERWISE I WILL NOT ACCEPT ITFour students sitting at a table in Wright food court, Oct. 1, 2004 (0:39)1 A: What is that you guys are eating?2 B: Tuna casserole, tuna noodle casserole, excuse me.3 C: Mm*4 D: Is it good?5 B: It is good.=6 A: =I’ve never had that.7 D: I hate tuna ’cause one year my grandma, or Busia we call her gave me tuna for a present for Christmas, 8 C [hehehehehe]9 A: Yeah10 D: Yeah11 A: That’s a funny story.12 D: Two cans? 13 C: Two cans14 B: I got some, uh, wool for Christmas last Christmas.15 C: Wool?16 D: Wool.17 C [laughs]18 B: Yeah my,::: uh, dad went to J.
