Cancer Unit 02 12 2013 Cancer is uncontrolled cell division Many gene mutation affect cell cycle checkpoints damaged DNA gets through and errors go uncorrected Cell grows into a rumor rapidly dividing cell cluster Tumors can be benign or malignant Benign Does not cause harm to the body Not cancerous It multiplies grows at a slow rate They don t spread to a different part of the body localized in one area Malignant Break away and spread to other parts of the body metastasis o Move through blood vessels to other parts Divide more rapidly than non cancerous cells Lose anchorage dependence Cell division is tightly regulated by many proteins Positive growth regulators activate cell division EGF binds to its receptors on the surface the signal then goes into the cell and results in signals being coded for that tell the cell to divide Negative growth regulators suppress cell division TGF Beta does the same as EGF but the signal it codes for is programmed for cell death 02 12 2013 02 12 2013
