Attend the Leading from the Second Chair Seminar. 2. Required reading and report. Read Leading from the Second Chair by Mike Bonem and Roger Patterson. Read 1,300 pages from the remaining books in the selected bibliography listed above. If the participant has previously read any of the books included in the bibliography for academic credit or has difficulty in accumulating the number of total pages required, another book may be substituted from the bibliography upon approval from the instructor. Complete a 4-5 page reading report describing some of the major themes in the material and how these apply to the student’s ministry context. 3. Choose three of the following six post-conference projects. a. Research Paper: Choose a major theme related to the seminar and write a 7-10 page formal research paper on that topic. The paper should utilize the seminar materials and books read as its foundation with further research and exploration done on the topic. This paper should identify major facets of the chosen topic, compare key literature and writings, and derive applicable conclusions for your ministry context. This paper should include supporting notational elements (footnotes, endnotes, or parenthetical references) and a thorough bibliography/reference list. b. Reflective Essay: Read one of the texts not included in the required reading (see bibliography) and write a 7-10 page paper that discusses the author’s central theme. Compare and contrast the book with the experiences derived in your ministry context, the insights gained at the seminar, as well as the book, Leading from the Second Chair. While this is not a research project per se, it should reflect an understanding of the topic in light of other prominent literature available. c. Biblical Analysis: Write a 7-10 page exegetical paper that discusses servant-leadership themes and principles in the Bible. Include appropriate historical, cultural, and textual analysis. Also include a section on practical application for churches and individuals today. d. Sermon Series: Develop a sermon series (three or more sermons) on a topic related to servant-leadership. Do not simply recycle old sermons. For this project, provide full manuscripts of each sermon (or at least outlines that show significant detail). If applicable, include accompanying sermon support such as PowerPoint slides, video or audio clips, or other media. Audiocassettes or compact discs of the sermons may be submitted, but must be in conjunction with
