PSYC 451 1st Edition Lecture 13Outline of Last LectureI. Du BoisOutline of Current Lecture I. NoddingsCurrent Lecture- Noddingso Caring for (subjective/intuitive) o vs Caring about (intellectual/abstract)o Not universal principles (like Kant’s categorical imperative) but based on universal (hopefully) attitude [experience] of being cared-for by others.o Not an intellectual game but basis for action. Males have a tendency to turn ethics into a “math problem” ‘if this happens under these situations what should X person do?’ This leads to Manuals that try to lay do specifics rather than General attitudes. o Should be something out in the world that you care about and something that you don’t let anyone talk you out of. o Ethical caring is caring-for someone, something in an attempt to help that other and enhance the ideal of ourselves as one-caring. (Defend a scumbag/speech).o No absolute values, righteousness leads to hatred. o Caring-for requires time, intensity and relationshipo Ethics too often concentrates on specific relationships (therapist-client) and becomes a rule-bound guide. o When we care-for something we have to move away from self-interests but this does notmean “love everyone”. That is impossible, an abstract/caring abouto Caring for can lead to conflict (others who care different way), and guilt (try to help but end up hurting) and often requires engrossment.o Caring is for the welfare, protection, enhancement of other. Not for our own glory, recognition-Munchausen by Proxyo Advocates “the sort of behavior that is conditioned not by a host of narrow and rigidly defined principles but by a broadly and loosely defined ethics that molds itself in situations and has a proper regard for human affections, weaknesses, and anxieties” 321. o Caring requires human judgment not a cookbook. Caring is not Problem solving or rationalizing. “At times we must suspend it [rationality] in favor of subjective thinking These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture.
