GEOG 070 Spring 2005 Lab 1 Introduction to UNC Network Computing Due Dates Wednesday Labs Tuesday January 25 2005 by 5 00 PM Thursday Labs Wednesday January 26 2005 by 5 00 PM Introduction to the Server at UNC The purpose of this lab is to introduce you to the structure of ISIS the server that we will be using in the lab portion of Geography 70 During the semester you will be using a program called ArcView to learn about GIS This program is stored on the central UNC Server It is imperative that you understand this lab because you will need to understand how the server is set up and where the various files you ll be using are located You will also need to know where to save your work Academic Technology Networks ATN manages all of the computer labs at UNC Because ATN manages all the labs there is a consistency to the computers no matter which lab you use So the following information should apply no matter what lab you are in If for some reason you do not have an onyen go to http help unc edu and get one now Make sure that you have also subscribed to ATN s web services as well Introduction to Computers in ATN Labs Logging in The one thing that you will notice when you sit down at the machine is that you have to login before you can begin work Type your ONYEN ID in the user id space and put your ONYEN password in the password space Printing All ATN labs will have a printer available There s nothing very difficult about printing while in the ATN labs simply choose PRINT from the file menu However please be judicious in deciding what you print you can help save some trees by only printing when necessary To help encourage paper saving the answers from your labs will be stored in your student file and your maps will be saved to your student web space I will check your work from there If you want to print a copy of the lab please do so BEFORE lab so that we will not waste any instruction time Saving Files This will be discussed in greater detail in the Folders Section and in the Software Section but briefly stated you should save your work on either network space H or J or on a floppy A DO NOT save your work on the computer s local hard drives C or D Applications All machines in every lab should be able to run ArcView There are two ways to start ArcView 1 From the Start Menu bottom left hand corner of screen Select programs Then GIS Software You should find ArcView 2 From a Folder on the Desktop From the Haines and Greenlaw labs you will find ArcView in the ArcView folder that resides on the desktop Other ATN labs may or may not have a folder on the desktop Meet Isis Understanding which folders you should save your work to will save you headaches when it comes time to turn in your lab All of the computers in ATN labs are connected to a collection of computers that are known as ISIS For simplicity s sake think of this group of computers as one big computer There are a lot of things stored on Isis many different application programs ArcView being only one as well as countless files and directories Every person who has an ONYEN ID has a folder where they can store files and set up directories and even set up web pages As you can imagine keeping up with the countless folders and files would be an impossible task without some type of logical structure Luckily the people at ATN have developed a fairly easy way to keep up with everything There are countless folders on ISIS most of which you ll never have to worry about There are three however that are important Those are the folders where you will go to get the data for the lab the folders where you will put your completed work and the folder where the applications are Below is a simplified picture of the structure of ISIS showing the three folders mentioned above 2 Department Space I Like most departments on campus Geography has space on ISIS to store data for classes and instructors On the machines in Saunders hall this data can be found on the I drive I drive is essentially a short cut that assigns the drive letter I to the initial portion of the URL pathway to the Geography Department s space on ISIS For some Geography Dept courses data for labs may be stored somewhere on the I drive as defined below I drive is a short cut that takes you to this location J isis depts geog This location is referred to as Geography s departmental space and creating a short cut to this location is referred to as mapping to Geography departmental space i e in the sense that a roadmap tells you how to get from one place to another In the present course our lab data is not being stored in the Geography departmental space Instead it is being stored in the following location J isis html courses 2005spring geog 070 006 data You can use the My Computer icon to navigate to the class course materials My Computer should be an icon on your desktop Double click the icon On the View menu select Explorer and then select the Folders option so that folders are made visible on the left hand side of your screen Double click on individual folders to navigate your way through the directory structure to the desired location Or you can click on the 3 symbol next to a folder to uncollapse i e expand the tree structure of the folder The pathway to navigate to the main folder of the class space is J isis html courses 2005spring geog 070 006 This is the main folder for our class In it will be sub folders containing data for each lab as well as individual folders for each student within a students sub folder There are two areas of the class space you will need to become familiar with 1 2 The space where lab data will reside The space that has been assigned to you in the Geography 70 folder 1 Data Data for the labs will be stored in J isis html courses 2005spring geog 070 006 data labx where labx represents the lab number e g lab1 lab2 etc 4 2 Your Space Each student in Geog 70 has been given a folder where they can save the lab assignments The only people who have access to this space are the instructor the TAs and the person whose ONYEN is on the folder Students do not have access to each other s folders The location of your folder is J isis html courses 2005spring geog 070 006 students your ONYEN For each lab you should create a new sub folder in this location so that you are able to keep all …
