5 Theories of Motivation
Instinct Theory Drive - Reduction Theory Arousal Theory Expectancy Theory Hierarchy of Needs
Instinct Theory
-biologically programmed to behave like humans (programmed to behave the way we do) -Our behavior is hard wired
Drive - Reduction Theory
-biological needs drive our behavior -derives from the concept of homeostasis -all organisms are motivated to maintain psychological equilibrium. -Drive: a state of arousal brought about by an underlying need which motivates on to engage in behavior tha will satisfy the need and reduce t…
Arousal Model
-We are motivated to maintain an optimum level of arousal - balance levels of arousal. -Yerkes Dodson Law -Mt. Everest discussion -Arousal and Performance -"flow" people perform their best and are most creative when they are optimally challenged arelative to their abilities.
Expectancy Theory
Behavior is motivated by expected outcomes. We engage in behavior because we expect something is going to happen. incentives - positive or negative stimuli that motivate our behavior.
Glucose
blood sugar liver
Cholecystokinin
CCK signals us to stop eating
Neuropeptide Y
stimulates cravings for carbs
Galanin
stimulates desire for fat
Entrostatin
-high fat -eliminates desire/cravings for fat
Lateral Hypothalamus
feeding center stimulates eating behavior even if you just ate. If destroyed, no longer get signal to start eating. You have to be forced to eat.
Ventromedial Hypothalamus
satiety center signals you to stop eating if destroyed, you never stop eating (never feel full)
excitement
stage one in sexual behavior incerease in blood flow to pelvic region can last minutes to hours vagina is lubricated, penis is errect, hard nipples
Plateau
stage 2 of sexual behavior organs feels minutes apart penis is more erect, vaginal lubrication increases
Orgasm
stage 3 of sexual behavior Peak of the plateau phase contractions most pleasurable
Resolution
Final stage/4th stage resting state men are incapable of having another orgasm but women can continue to have them "This is why some people think god is female"
