Instinct Theory |
-biologically programmed to behave like humans (programmed to behave the way we do)
-Our behavior is hard wired |
Drive - Reduction Theory |
-biological needs drive our behavior
-derives from the concept of homeostasis -all organisms are motivated to maintain psychological equilibrium. -Drive: a state of arousal brought about by an underlying need which motivates on to engage in behavior tha will satisfy the need and reduce the tension. |
Arousal Model |
-We are motivated to maintain an optimum level of arousal - balance levels of arousal.
-Yerkes Dodson Law -Mt. Everest discussion -Arousal and Performance -"flow" people perform their best and are most creative when they are optimally challenged arelative to their abilities. |
Expectancy Theory |
Behavior is motivated by expected outcomes.
We engage in behavior because we expect something is going to happen. incentives - positive or negative stimuli that motivate our behavior.
