Case Studies Case 1 The patient is a 21 year old male college student who complains of insomnia stuttering shakiness and feelings of worry nervousness and dizziness The patient was raised in a highly competitive family and was the eldest child One piece of advice the patient remembers his father giving him is Never let anyone get the best of you Although the patient has some acquaintances in college he has few friends Case 2 Bernice is 46 and this is her fourth time in out patient therapy since her father died of pneumonia Bernice says that she is afraid of everything because germs could be anywhere She is particularly afraid of rough edges mail canned goods and silverware To try and reduce her general discomfort Bernice washed herself three to four hours in the bathroom each morning To make sure that the soap is clean Bernice scrapes off the top layer before she washes Case 3 Gina Rinaldi is single and 31 years old living with another single female She is a successful editor for a publishing company and is described by her co workers as an efficient and productive worker Gina is the youngest of nine siblings and describers her mother as the most domineering woman she had ever known Gina also reports that she has a habit of sleep walking is very submissive to her mother and does not feel that she is very coordinative During therapy a second personality emerges within Gina which the therapists calls Mary Sunshine Mary appears more confident and graceful compared to Gina Gina also reports finding large withdrawals in her bank account and cups of hot chocolate in the kitchen neither Gina nor her roommate like hot chocolate As therapy continues Gina s behavior becomes more erratic and sometimes she seems to be a separate person switching between personalities Case 4 Bill has been referred to the counseling center by his Resident Director The RD had noticed a change in Bill s behavior over the past few months Bill was not leaving the dorm often primarily only going out for meals and sometimes for class He had also noticed that Bill s grades were dropping from A s to C s and that Bill no longer wanted to come to intermural Basketball Bill was one of their leading scores and had being playing ball since he was a kid When questioned about his behavior Bill answered in a very slow monotone voice His responses were vague and emotionless Bill did mention that his parents were settling a long divorce that had been occurring for 3 months Who Am I 1 You enter my office and lie down on my couch We discuss your past relationships specifically those with your mother and father To help understand and identify your hidden inner conflicts we practice free association Out time together is important and I anticipate that this process will take a number of years 2 I do not view you as a patient but rather as a client Together we are focused on your needs and I the therapist am only there to help facilitate My approach to therapy is client centered and I want to try and understand the world through your eyes The focus is on you helping yourself to become the best person that you can be I will be supportive of what every decisions you make 3 After we establish a rapport I will discuss with you any irrational thoughts that you are experiencing I will show you how this way of thinking is incorrect and how it is distorting your behavior I will challenge you to change the way you think Sometimes our sessions may be confrontational 4 After the initial intake interview we will discuss the maladaptive behaviors in you life Perhaps your unhappiness or you anxiety stems from a learned conditioned response We may try to a token economy to help you change your behavior 5 After running some tests off to the lab it will be important to discuss things such as family history and diet Your feelings of low self worth and irregular sleeping patterns may be the result of a biological imbalance I will offer you a prescription and then we should meet weekly to monitor your progress Answer Sheet Case Studies Disorder 1 3 Common Characteristics 1 2 3 Disorder 2 3 Common Characteristics 1 2 3 Disorder 3 3 Common Characteristics 1 2 3 Therapy Styles 1 2 3 4 5 Persuasion What are the three things that influence persuasion 1 2 3
