Office Hours Monday Wednesday 2 00 p m to 3 00 p m or by appointment Attendance Policy Attendance is mandatory during the semester It is important that you attend all class meetings to receive supplemental class materials and participate in class discussions and demonstrations During each class meeting students will review key terms for the current chapter Each student will be responsible for one key term before each exam Assignments will be collected in class and must be fully completed by the beginning of the class period Any assignment not fully prepared by the beginning of the class period will be considered late Late assignments will be graded out of half the available points No assignments will be accepted after the last class day of class Required Materials Each student will be required to have a copy of Baron R A 2001 Psychology 5nd ed Boston Allyn and Bacon The publisher also offers supplemental text such as a study guide and on line materials While these are not required they may help prepare for the exams and provides sources for the essays Students may purchase copies of the book at the Dolphin Bookstore If you obtain a used copy of Baron s Fourth Edition that will be fine however there are some subtle differences in the new edition Goals of the Course 1 Become aware of the influences of psychology around us 2 Review and Discuss the major topics in psychology 3 Gain a better understanding of human behavior and cognition 4 Investigate current issues in psychology Assignments Fish Bowl Exercise 5 points each Each class 5 names will be randomly selected from the class list These five students must give a definition or explanation for a pre selected key term from that week s chapter Every student will have an opportunity to participate in this exercise before each exam Each student will receive 1 pass if a student chooses to pass their name goes back into the fish bowl and they may be called upon later on during that section of the class Students who are absent on the days when their name is chosen will forfeit their pass In the event a student has already used their pass they will lose 5 points Psychology Essays 25 points each at the beginning of each new section students will receive a list of essay questions for the upcoming chapters Students may choose 1 of the given topics and write a 2 3 page essay answering the question They essays should be supported with at least 1 journal article 1 on line resource and 1 other source The topics for the essays will focus on current issues in psychology Exams 100 points each each exam will consist of material from class and the text The format of the exams will be multiple choice and short answer Students with special needs should see the instructor with all relevant documents prior to the first exam Make up exams will only be given under exceptional circumstances Students wishing a make up must contact the instructor 1 week prior to the exam Research Participation 10 points OR Literature Review 10 points Extra Credit Presentation 10 points students may choose to prepare a 10 15 min presentation on a topic related to the topic scheduled to be
