Victoria NewburyKin 430 Instrumentation Lab ADue: 9/171. Do an Internet search for motion analysis systems. Identify three other companies (aside from Qualysis) that produce commercial kinematic measurement systems. Aside from studying human motion for research purposes, what are the other major applicationsof kinematic measurement technology? Three companies that produce commercial kinematic measurement systems are Vicon, Xcitex, and zFlomotion. Kinematic measurement technology can also be used for entertainment purposes. For example, in Tony Hawk’s skateboarding games the creators used kinematic measurement systems in order to record professional skateboarders doing tricks. They used this data in the game to make it seem realistic. It was also used in the Lord of the Rings for the character of Gollum. They used a human actor with reflectors on their body to portray Gollum’s movements and create full CG character animation for Gollum. This technology can also be applied to engineering as well, such as with the movement of earthquake simulators. It is also useful in automotives for crash testing and component testing.2. View the following YouTube video: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VsVkaIaoU38Note that the letter between the two a’s in the web address is a capital “I” (sounds like eye). What is the major difference between an AMTI force platform (which we have at UMass)and a Kistler force platform? How does this affect the kinds of activities that each type of platform is best suited for studying? The major difference between Kistler and AMTI force platforms are the plates they use toproduce them. Kistler force plates have piezo electric transducers in each corner and are best suited for short dynamic movements such as running and jumping. On the other hand, AMTI produces strain gauge plates, which are better suited for less dynamic movements that are more concentrated on balance. Examples of this include archery or holding yoga poses.3. Based on an Internet search, identify a biomechanics laboratory at another university. Briefly describe the equipment they have and the types of research they do. Another university that has a biomechanics laboratory is at the University of Washington. From their website, I learned that they are currently doing research on adult spine biomechanics, biomechanics of the developing spine, joint replacement biomechanics, and biomechanics of the foot and ankle. The facilities include a tissue dissection and preparation area and many specialized test systems. The specialized test systems include high speed MTS servo-hydraulic testing system, bench top acceleration sled system, 3-D spine simulator, and high-speed motion capture and video imaging systems. An example of how this equipment is used in their research is the use of the bench top accelerationsled system to test the biomechanics of the human spine. They are able to observe how a human spine reacts to impact at different speeds and angles in order to get a better understanding of what happens when injuries
