Out Lasting- Iceland is throwing out their old constitution and making a brand new one to adapt to new times. - Rick Beman says that the founding fathers would be astonished that the constitution is lasting this long they just wanted to build a framework for it. - Akail Lamar said that the amendments have a huge white space to create more as our country changes. Women- In the 1920s women earned the right to vote but they were still looked at as superiors tomen. III. Congress and President Powers- Congress can pass laws but the president can veto it.- The president can spend money but the congress decides how much. IV. Watergate Scandal- In 1972 the Watergate scandal happened. Five guys broke into the Watergate building and planted devices to listen in on the supreme court.- President Nixon paid someone to cover all this up and got caught. It came out that Nixon recorded conversations in the office. He turned in the recordings but they were edited. Finally he was forced to turn over the real tapes and it proved that he was involvedin the scandal. This lead to Nixon being impeached. V. After 911 - The Patriots act was passed in order to fight terrorism. - After 911 the government had really cracked down on immigrants because of the fact that they did not know the real reason for them being in our country. Adama Ba was 16 when she got arrested on immigration charges. Her lawyers showed up and asked questions about bombing and her checking out books from the library about bombs. They thought she was a suicide bomber. She still doesn’t know what evidence pointed towards her as being a one. - Jack Goldsmith was appointed as a legal adviser to the General Counsel of the Department of Defense during the Bush administration. He thought that the government might have gone to far but they were just trying to protect Americans from those they didn’t know were fighting them (terrorists). VI. Old and Failing - Some people think that the constitution has failed us because it isn’t adapting to our time, but really we are failing the constitution. We are trying to get more out of it than what the founding fathers intended. - Just because something is old doesn’t mean its out of
