Chapter 31 Notes Fungi Concept 31 5 Fungi Play Key Roles in Nutrient Cycling Ecological Interactions and Human Welfare LICHENS A LICHEN is a symbiotic association between a photosynthetic microorganism and a fungus in which millions of photosynthetic cells are held in a mass of fungal hyphae HYPHAE branching filaments that make up the mycelium of a fungus The algae or cyanobacteria provides carbon compounds a cyanobacterium also fixes nitrogen and provides organic nitrogen compounds They break down the surface by physically penetrating and chemically attacking it and they trap windblown soil Nitrogen fixing lichens also add organic nitrogen to some ecosystems
