Alcohol – prohibition--most of everyone agreed for prohibition in order to pass 18th amendment--Organized crime came along, prohibition is not the best way to counteract drugsNational minimum drinking age act of 1984Purchase and Public Possession of alcoholic beverages restricted to 21 or over-still says nothing about consumptionFederal Aid Highway ActMinimum drinking age is a State LawAll states eventually adopted a state law because they would lose highway funding if they didn’t-Prohibition leads to violence because it drives the market underground-Exceptions--Religious purposes – Communion wine--Medical purposes – whiskey used as medicine (walgreens)--private clubs – in privacy--for work purposes – politicians Marijuana is substituting alcohol in early research; better medical marijuana laws are lowering traffic fatality rates.The War on Drugs--president Nixon, but REALLY got started with president Reagan--republicans and democrats have played a part--US spends 50 billion a year fighting war on drugs (Federal/Stater/Local)--We spend as much money fighting the WoD as we do buying drugs!--drugs have a HUGE markup – you cant really-We’d have to capture over ¾ of ALL drug shipments to reduce profitsLatent Consequences:1.
