Coal and Steel Community was important to the countries o France wanted to ensure that Germany would not get powerful enough again o Needed to find a new way to control Germany that would not lead to another and attack war Treaty of Versailles What role did the Cold War and its end have on European integration What role did the U S play Role of the Cold War threat o There was a need to rebuild Germany militarily and unite against a common Best way to defend against a strong USSR attack was to build up a strong Germany Role of the US o The Marshall Plan Foreign Aid program designed to rebuild Western Europe wanted to use this money as an attempt to get everyone to work together Create an organization to distribute the money out to the countries non profit organization Combat the spread of communism rebuild a war devastated region remove trade barriers modernize industry and make Europe prosperous again How and why did the pace of integration change over time What were the main stumbling blocks to further integration during the slow times and the main drivers of integration during the fast times Why did some forms of integration occur quicker than others Pace of Integration o Monnet believed that if integration started slow and focused in one area that it would eventually progress to other areas and would take place at a quicker pace o Through a series of
