Week 3 DQ 1 Due Tuesday May 12 2009 Subject line Your Name Week 3 DQ 1 Please post your response by replying to this thread Discussion Question 1 Is it best to adjust instruction to teach in accordance with individual learning styles or should students experience and be encouraged to participate in activities that require learning styles other than those they naturally prefer In other words if a child s preferred learning style is visual and field independent prefers to work alone should all instruction be based on visual independent activities or should the student also be accountable for participation in group activities that incorporate other modes of learning for example bodily kinesthetic auditory and so forth Explain your answer then respectfully respond to a classmate s post with an opposing viewpoint I believe that students should be accountable for learning in various modes It s impossible in a classroom of 25 or 30 to teach each child in his her preferred mode Most kids can and do learn from a variety of modes It s the student s responsibility to try various modes and to use the modes that help him her the most during independent study homework What kind of learner each student where it is visual aural kinesthetic needs to be addressed Many students are a combination of two of these Although each student needs to his her strengths and weaknesses we should involve every style of learning The more modes of learning the better that way the student will learn the preferred style but be willing to try all There are three basic ways students can interact with each other as they learn They can compete to see who is best they can work individualistically toward a goal without paying attention to other students or they can work cooperatively with a vested interest in each other s learning as well as their own Of the three interaction patterns competition is presently the most dominant Students should experience and be encouraged to participate in all types of instruction As children grow into adults it is important that they learn to adjust to life as it happens There may not always be a choice as to how learning material is presented to them If we allow children to learn only in that learning style they prefer we are doing them a disservice Our Children will not be prepared them for the real world In order for children to succeed they need to experience different things A mother may think that her child is a visual learner but in class the child does well using kinesthetic style I believe that it is important to encourage children to try new ways of learning they should be able to incorporate all the different learning styles into different parts of their lives As in many educational debates in regard to learning styles I take the middle ground Instruction should be adjusted to teach in accordance with individual styles and students should be encouraged to participate in activities that require learning in different styles For example if a child prefers to receive there instruction visually they should receive instruction visually however they should experience different learning styles that could present a challenge Student development has become an important part of education if students are to be prepared for the real world they must learn a variety of options to solve problems This is closely related to a topic regarding making students feel comfortable by creating a familiar environment in the classroom However this approach well not prepare students to face the unexpected In real life we consistently find ourselves in difficult situations by unexpected events accordingly students can should learn at an early age that life is not stagnant but is always changing In the same way students should be familiar with different learning styles Even if they are comfortable with one style they should experience others to better prepared them for their future Week 3 DQ 2 Due Thursday March 12 2009 Response 2 Response 3 Subject line Your Name Week 3 DQ 2 Please post your response by replying to this thread Discussion Question 2 What factors influence how educational experiences of boys differ from educational experiences of girls Respond to a classmate s post from the perspective of either a school aged boy or girl identify which perspective you represent and explain why you agree or disagree with your classmate s post maturity in the sense that girls mature faster then boys creativity based on facts and science men are more creative than girls It is widely known that boys do worse at schools than girls a few reasons Girls are encouraged more to read and play quietly boys are brought up to be boisterous and practical Boys are more encouraged in sport therefore lean towards this more than academics Reading is something boys score worse in because reading is often geared towards girls gossip magazines princess stories bed time stories etc Writing topics are geared towards girls and should include more boy friendly topics Boys mature more slowly on average than girls and therefore find it more difficult to get their ideas out in academics they also sometimes due to upbringing find it harder to express emotions and therefore find it harder to empathize with characters Girls like to be liked and want to please teachers by working well boys prefer to be class clowns These are all generalizations and some peoples opinions and only a small list of reasons Response 2 Education that is something that can be considered many things We have school education and social education Basically we live in a society that socializes our children to believe that women are the weaker sex and this can cause and inferiority complex in some women However sometimes males can feel overwhelmed by constantly having to hide their emotions and struggles because they are not supposed to feel or need help wake up people education starts at HOME teach equality of all race ethnicity religion gender and age Children are a product of their environment I think a major difference in school education is that fact that many teachers and staff discriminate against smart female children if your too smart then you are stigmatized Male children can suffer as well because expectations are too high We need to start showing children that it is okay for all of them to feel cry love fail succeed etc Response 3 The educational differences between boys and girls are that they are treated differently when they are younger and they
