Week 1 checkpoint The factors that make it a professional career are no different than any other professional career First a college degree is required Second continuing education is required Third you must be licensed and properly certified to teach Although doctors and lawyers go to school longer many professions only require a four year degree However some colleges are now requiring five years to earn a teaching degree By having a degree and being properly certified to teach a teacher can then do the following in his or her classroom 1 The ability to make decisions swiftly and effectively Teachers make more decisions daily than any other profession Decisions that teachers make affect not only themselves but also the students 2 Content knowledge Teachers must know what they re teaching in order to pass the information on to students 3 Assessment Teachers must know if the students get what has been taught Teachers can teach a concept all day long but if a student hasn t mastered the concept then the teacher hasn t taught the material effectively That s why teachers have to assess their students often in order to determine whether they understand the concepts or not If students are not demonstrating understanding then the teachers may need to employ an alternative teaching strategy Students need much encouragement meaningful feedback personalized attention and appropriate work to succeed They really enjoy it when an adult simply listens to them Everyday teachers must renew their commitment to be positive role models not only their students but the larger school community Keep everything organized including the classroom Everyone is impressed with a well organized classroom and it minimizes teacher stress too I find that being organized even at my current job makes things a lot smoother
