Lecture 6 3 4 13 Objectives the coordinated management of meaning CMM Goal purpose of CMM Explanation in CMM Assumptions guiding CMM Hierarchy of meaning The coordination of meaning The use of rules in the CMM CMM s meta theoretical assumptions The coordinated management of meaning Cronen Pearce Harris 1982 o Chapter The coordinated management of meaning a theory of communication o Mostly Cronen and Pearce know them o Unlike symbolic interaction theory this is an actual communication theory this is a theory of communication Goal of CMM o To explain how people co create meaning in conversation o Creation of meaning between people and how it affects behavior but the approaches are very different CMM is a Rules theory o CMM Explains What happens in conversations as a result of following rules What happens when different rules meet People use rules to create and interpret meaning Use different rules get different meaning Meaning is constantly coordinated o Assumptions guiding CMM People create systems of meaning by organizing meaning Hierarchically structure or levels of meaning different levels of meaning that people go through in order to interpret information Temporally in terms of time we impose time on communication transactions we create time beginnings middles and ends in order to interpret meaning People co create a social reality Communication is a social endeavor Symbolic words In conversation with other people creating your own reality Behavior not interpretable except in context of larger system Personal and interpersonal meaning o Personal meaning come with our own meanings o Interpersonal meeting we coordinate interpersonal meeting once we are with the other person Hierarchy of meaning Six levels o Content The meaning of the words If we don t understand the content then we have to look at these other levels o Speech acts o Contract The speech act is what we do to people with our words Ex we can compliment someone we can insult someone Use language to do things to people The relationship between the two people we are interacting The relationship sometimes determines what the rules are so based on that we can get meanings from things o Episodes punctuation Communication patterns but more with time What we do in order to understand what s going on we create beginnings middles and end Communication transactions that we give meaning to based on time o Life Scripts Field of experience Everything that we have done and learned since the time that we have come together in interaction o Cultural patterns Our cultural norms provide us part of our life script The coordination of meaning o Exists when people attempt to make sense of messages in conversation o Three possible outcomes Fully understand Partially understand Don t understand at all o Coordination depends on Sense of morality ethics We behave on the rights and obligations that we have based on the roles that we play Vary with different cultures Different rights and responsibilities We use those resources when we are trying to come to Available resources meaning Following rules If we come to common rules then we are much more likely to be able to coordinate meaning with the same rules Rules o Descriptions of how to process information o Provide common symbolic framework for communication o Provide opportunity for choice Types of Rules o Constitutive rules definition What a message should mean within a given context Those are rules that have to do with the meaning of the word o Regulative behavior Guidelines for behavior Based on that meaning we have certain expectations of behavior Ex lets say I say I love you to my boyfriend if you say that you expect behaviors like you expect them to say it back or some physical reciprocation fidelity Research o Intercultural communication o Interpersonal relationships o Families o Organizations o Applied in therapeutic situations
