03 26 2012 1 Women and Work a Because of the decreasing male workforce because they were away at war women were able to work and get jobs i Red Cross United Service Organizations USO 1 these were opportunities for women to be employed to military or war related jobs ii In the Military 1 Women s Army Auxiliary Corps WAACS 2 Women s Auxiliary Ferrying Squadron WAFS a Women pilots that performed supply flight missions They wouldn t allows women to fight 3 Women Accepted for Volunteer Emergency Service WAVES a Navy s initiative for women s service 4 Army Nurse Corps a 75 000 women serving as nurses b These allowed for all races to be present in these organizations but they could only minister to their race c Theses women served across the world as well not only at home iii In Industry d The military is very hesitant to hire female doctors but are forced to when there is a shortage of doctors 1 This is where the most jobs opened up for women 2 Industries didn t want to hire women but once the employment was wiped out from the war they turned to recruiting from across the country in the effort to not employ women 3 By Feb 1943 Ford began to hire large amounts of women which starts to open other companies to hiring women 4 Women are needed because you never knew if a man you hire would be drafted 5 People were against married women working or mothers working They were ok with single ladies working but leaving the workforce after they got married a Rosie the Riveter iv In Government 1 200 000 women are in civil government before the war but after the war there is around a million Women after the war made up 40 of the civil government 2 Women and the Family a Marriage and Children i Women start to marry faster and younger because they are scared that they ll be too od to marry after the war ended So people are marrying after courting for only a month or so b Sexual Delinquency i All of the problems in society were blamed on women in the workforce Things like divorce and STDs 1 Social Protection Division SPD a They were supposed to find people that were having sex outside of marriage They sighted single women to be led to these affairs b They were able to pass laws that gave single women curfews 2 Office of Community War Services 3 American Social Hygiene Association African Americans in WWII 1 In Industry a Philip Randolph i Used war to bring AA prejudice to light b Brotherhood of Sleeping Car Porters i Phil Randolph was the president of this ii Most people working in here were AA s iii Plans a march on Washington for awareness iv Roosevelt cant let this march happen because this is detrimental to war support but giving in would hurt his congressional support by southern politicians c Fair Employment Practices Committee i Roosevelt comes up with this committee that bans discriminatory employment This isn t a law but it says that the gov t wont support or hire any company that hires based on race d Congress of Racial Equality CORE i Dedicated to nonviolent protest ii Wanted to expose the high ideals that America had for other nations and equality in other nations but they wanted that in America 2 In the Military apart from each other a The military is separated and segregated Blacks and whites serve b Northern blacks are surprised when they go for basic training in the south and see segregation that was legal c Most blacks were put in charge of guarding German POWs In most cases German POWs had more rights in the US than American blacks 3 Race Riots a Alexandria LA 1942 i A black soldier almost get run over by a car driven by a white woman and makes a comment at her Because of this the cops are called to arrest this soldier When other black soldiers got involved the MPs were called in and it turned into a full fledged riot The MPs eventually just arrested every black in the area b Zoot Suit Riots 1943 i Started when whites would ride through minority neighborhoods and beat up anyone wearing a zoot suit ii Minorities would wear zoot suits because they were more expensive suits because of their increased wealth iii Navy personnel stationed near Los Angeles got involved and took it iv Riots broke out but police wouldn t get involved because it involved way too far the military 4 Japanese Americans a Are treated worse because they are directly connected to the enemies we were fighting in the war i Issei and Nisei 1 Issei cant become Americans first generation but Nisei are Americans second generation a Japanese American Citizen s League i Japanese citizens were immediately seen as spies after Pearl Harbor ii Invasion Hysteria 1 Gen John L DeWitt a Wanted to relocate Japanese American citizens b He wants to start camps to relocate them all over the US c They call them Relocation Centers to distinguish them from concentration camps in Germany They wanted to present them as places where the citizens wanted to move there and that they were pioneer communities d The gov t gave out questionnaires that asked these people in these camps questions about their past They also asked whether they d give their loyalty to America and not to the Emperor The problem is that they d be giving up their Japanese citizenship but couldn t be American s therefore not having citizenship anywhere 2 Executive Order 9066 iii The American Way 1 War Relocation Authority iv Dissent 1 No No Boys armed forces a Guys that said no to giving up citizenship or serving in the US b They were convicted of evading the draft if they said no They could go to jail or be deported to Japan but most had never been to Japan or even spoke Japanese 2 Hirabayashi v U S 1943 a Law student at Harvard said that Dewitt didn t have the right to issue curfews to Japanese American citizens b He tries to get arrested so that he can go to trial to argue the gov ts issue of the curfew c Gov t says it has the right because of military necessity But they don t question whether or not it is militarily necessary they leave that to the military 3 Korematsu v U S 1944 a Says Japanese evacuation was unlawful and he tries a back alley surgery to round his eyes that leaves him partially blind so that he could stay with his white girlfriend 4 Ex Parte Endo 1944 a Girl says that she was passed as American and she says that she should no longer been able to be held The gov t cant hold citizens that
