Basic Human Needs- components of human existence that must be satisfied for individualsto develop their human capacity. 2B. Individual Well-Being- one of the clear goals of professional practice in a family and consumer sciences. Without healthy individuals, there cannot be strong families or vital communities. 2C. Family Strengths- the development of strong families is another goal of the profession. Families whose members are healthy and who have a strong social network are also more able tocope with the inevitable stresses of life. 2D. Community Vitality- communities provide resources that most families alone cannot. 3. Cross-Cutting Themes 3A. Wellness- wellness is not the absence of disease, but rather, optimal functioning in every dimension of life. 3B. Appropriate Use of Technology- Home economists helped introduce technology into homes as a way to reduce labor. 3C. Global Interdependence- Global crisis and skirmishes will continue to divide and separate people. 3D. Resource Development & Sustainability- the current interest in protecting the environmentwill continue to increase while accommodating building growth. 3E.
