Ashlyn HickeyFCS 101-0110/11/19Assignment #41. Dr. Howard Gardner said, “Intelligence is the ability to respond successfully to new situations and the capacity to learn from one’s past experiences. (Shelton, 1992). Dr. Gardner was a professor at Harvard and developed his theory of multiple intelligencesin 1983 (Shelton, 1992). In his theory, he started off with six different intelligences and now has expanded to nine different intelligences for humans. Gardner’s nine different intelligences are: verbal-linguistic intelligence means you have good verbal skills and sounds, logical-mathematical intelligence means you have the ability to think and use numerical patterns, spatial-visual intelligence is when you can think in images and pictures, bodily-kinesthetic intelligence means you can control body movements, musical intelligences means you can produce and appreciate music, existential intelligence means you can answer deep questions about question existence, naturalist intelligence means you can recognize the things in nature, interpersonal intelligence is when you are able to respond to others feelings, and intrapersonal means you are self-aware of beliefs and values (Mind, 2014). The multiple intelligence theory is “a theory about the brain that says human beings are born with a single intelligence, that cannot be changed, and is measurable by a psychologist” (Mind, 2014). He believes that people have a unique blend of skills. 2. My interests and weaknesses:- Social: You like to develop ideas and learn from other people. You like to talk. You have good social skills. Effective techniques of enhancing your learning using your social intelligence include taking part in group discussions or discussing a topic one-to-one with another person. Find ways to build reading andwriting exercises into your group activities, such as: reading a dialogue or a play with other people, doing team learning/investigating projects, setting up interviewquestions and interviewing your family, and writing down the interview, and writing notes to another instead of talking ((McKenzie, 1999).- Nature: You are sensitive to nature and environment. You probably know the names of rocks, flowers, birds, and trees. You love to be outdoors. Here are some ways to use your nature intelligence in your learning: work in the garden, read about plants and/or animals, study habits of fish or birds, read nature magazines, go hiking, take photographs of what you find on your hike, and write a story describing the photographs ((McKenzie, 1999).- Self: You have a very good sense of self. You like to spend time by yourself and think things over. You will often take in information from another person, mull it over by yourself, and come back to that person later to discuss it. You like working on projects on your own. You often prefer to learn by trial and error. Effective techniques to enhance your learning include keeping a journal and giving yourself time to reflect on new ideas and information. More ideas: go on "guided imagery" tours, set aside time to reflect on new ideas and information, encourage journal writing, work on the computer, practice breathing for relaxation, use brainstorming methods before reading, listen to and read "how to" tapes and books, and read cookbooks ((McKenzie, 1999).- I slacked some in body movement, logic/math, language, spatial, and musical. I knew I needed to exercise more, especially being in college, since I do not eat the best. I know I am not the all time best at math, but I do not have anymore math classes to take so I feel as long as I know the basic math skills, I should be set. I was surprised by spatial since I keep my room clean, but it is meaning more like who I am around. I like to be by myself often, because I can not concentrate around others in-order-to do my homework. I like to hang out with my roommates, but I do not get to often, due to having so much homework, that I have to be in a quiet setting. I listen to music every day, but I only like certain genres of music, so that one definitely makes sense!- I knew I was a pretty social person. It definitely depends on the situation and who is around though. It is really good for me to be social, due to me wanting to open up my own daycare. Working with kids is a lot more fun if you like to interact with them. Also, most children wouldn’t want to go to a daycare where the caregiver doesn’t interact with them, that is no fun. Having your own daycare willinclude talking to many of the children’s parents, grandparents, teachers, etc. I also need to have a good sense of myself, because it is always good to relax after a long day. I also love nature. I love animals and many children do as well! Its notgood for children to be inside in front of a screen all the time, so I will take them outside often. So, I definitely think my interests match with a caregiver. I do thinkI need to learn to have a lot more body movement as kids love to run. I also need to learn more music, so I can sing and dance with the kids.2. It is always good for everyone to know that people are different. We are not all the same and we learn differently. It is very helpful for teachers to know that students learn differently. Some learn hands on, some learn just by reading, and some just have the common knowledge and interests of certain subjects. When teachers know these things, they have better knowledge to know how to corporate the different teaching skills in-order-for all the students to be able to learn. Students need to remember to not judge otherstudents if they get bad grades and to not get too down on themselves if they get a bad grade. Every student has different interests and are stronger in some subjects than others. Lastly, parents need to remember that they can’t get mad at their children if they don’t do the best in some subjects. My sister was really good at science and I never was. School wasn’t my brother’s thing and my mom would always get so upset because she would have to bribe him to do his homework, but school isn’t for everyone. I always succeeded in English but not science, and my mom would get upset with me. It’s important for everyone to keep in mind that we all learn differently and succeed and have interest in different things in life.3. If bosses find their workers strengths, they can use them to choose which jobs and tasks to give them. My old boss, Debbie, always sent me outside with the kids since
