I will assign a list of objectives to your group. You should work togethertoday in class and outside of class to develop a THOROUGH and ACCURATE study guide (please use your textbooks,articles and class notes to develop the guide). You should type the study guide and post it to ELC by 6pm on Tuesday September 10, 2013. Equal participationfrom each group member is expected and I encourage group members to email me an assessment of each other’seffort, I will use this in determining participation points for this assignment. Group 1 1. Describe the differences and similarities of a republic vs. a democratic republic. Be sure to detail what group holds the power in each. 2. Explain the principles of a democratic government. 3. What is meant by absolute power corrupts absolutely? What did the founders establish to prevent this? 4. In Federalist 51, Madison writes that "ambition should be made to counter ambition." What does this mean? Why does he believe that this is necessary? How does it manifest in the structure of U.S. government?5. How do citizens withdraw consent to be governed? Give an example of why they would do this. 6. What are the primary political values established in the Declaration of Independence and Constitution? Group 2 1. Explain the theoretical and historical factors that influenced the writers of the U.S. Constitution2. Why was the concept of natural rights revolutionary? 3. Describe the structure of the Articles of Confederation, and explain why the confederation failed. 4. Identify and explain the compromises made by the delegates to come to agreement on the U.S. constitution. 5. Explain the rationale for, and give examples of the separation of powers and the checks and balances in the U.S. constitution. 6. What is Judicial Review? How and why was it established?Group 3 1. Define federalism and contrast the federal system of government with the unitary and confederal systems in explaining where governmental power lies. 2. Identify two advantages and two disadvantages of the U.S. federal system. 3. Locate the sources of federalism in the U.S. Constitution; using the terms vertical control and horizontal control, explain how the founders intended federalism and separation of powers to limit the expansion of national power. 4. Explain the historical evolution of federalism as a result of the Marshall Court, the Civil War, the New Deal,civil rights, and federal grant-making. Group 41. Explain the origin of the Bill of Rights, and discuss how these rights were applied to the states.2.
