Experience samplingLecture 2Measuring Personality- Personality is measured quantitatively.- Quantitative methods allows for the use of numbers to represent complex observationsWays to Measure PersonalityInterviews- Usually face-to-face and the interviewer draws conclusions about the person interviewed in order to make numerical ratings.- There are three (3) elements of interviews:1) Structured: There is a specific direction that the interview should be flowing. Usually straightforward2) Semi-Structured: The interview is often the same for everyone, but there is room for flexibility among all persons being interviewed.3) Unstructured: The interview has no direction, or the conversation is all over the place.These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- Interviews yield detailed information and are individualized. However, interviews can be time consuming and subjective. Self-report scales- The most popular method used to measure personality.- People are given statements and ratings that result in a sum or average of those ratings.- Self-report scales are inexpensive and can be given to a lot of people. However, there may be an issue with inaccurate reporting or biased reporting.Informant reports- An add-on to self-report scales where other people are asked to rate a person on the same scale Friends Family members Coworkers- Informant reports are cheap and provide a way for peers to evaluate a person without worrying about inaccurate or biased reporting. However, not all things are observable to peers.Experience sampling- People are asked how they are feeling or what they are doing at various times of their day.- Experience sampling reveals things that people cannot report on, as well as showing variability. However, experience sampling can be time consuming, expensive and technically
