HIST 2112 1960s Protest movements Civil Rights Movement o The rights of all citizens for all citizens o We shall overcome SNCC o Student Nonviolent Christian Conference o Suspicious of MLK Used too many religious practices o Lead the protests Selma March o Nonviolent protest o Still attacked and beaten by police SNCC ejects white people from its movement in 1966 o Movement for black people by black people o Don t need white people o Black power Black nationalism Rejected the idea of integration Black is beautiful Blacks being true to who they are May lose this during integration Malcolm X o Separate but equal Supported it Black Panthers o Have guns o You hit us we shoot back o Supposed to startle and scare you The New Left o The Old Left Triangle liberals Union supporters o Any group that had an issue with society o If you believed in The right not to be segregated The right to vote The right to be free from violence by authorities o Students for a Democratic Society SDS Many members were started in SNCC Fought Racism Poverty Don t like LBJ Feel like his liberalism and Great Society address these things but never fix them o Hated the draft The establishment forcing you to do its dirty work for it Hippies o Not the same as the Left o Their protest was dropping out of society all together o Stopped Shaving Showering Using deodorant o Didn t want to conform o Didn t want jobs or money o Take drugs Marijuana Encourages community Calms you down Acid Strip the illusions mainstream society has planted in your mind LSD Used by FBI at first as a truth serum Leaked into mainstream soiety
