HIST 2112 - 1950s- Civil Rights Movemento Legacy of Civil War is alive and wello Most blacks are still not voting Being denied citizenship Being denied voting rightso Many blacks fought in WWII- Tremendous economic growtho Rise of consumerismo Expecting economic growth to continue to increaseo Except for blacks No increase in standard of living Legal Approach- Attack individual laws- NAACP (National Association for the Advancement of Colored People)- Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, Kansas – 1954o Attack segregation where it is weako Law says separate but equal schools is okayo NAACP understands that the schools are unequal so it is not okay Inherently discriminatoryo Changed and made all schools across the nation desegregate with “all deliberate speed”o A lot of schools ignored the Supreme Courto UGA almost shut the university down to prevent desegregation- Created segregation academieso ‘Schools that best fit your needs’o Resulted in racially segregatedo Also, academies cost money and eliminated a lot of the poorer black population- Emmett Till murder o Northerner, does not understand southern ruleso Said something sexual to a store clerk’s wifeo Kidnapped from his house Beaten Shot in the heado Weighted down in a river and found a few days latero Sent back to Chicagoo His mother had a glass casket so everyone could see the crueltyo Killers are found not guiltyo Then confessed to everything Cannot be tried again for the same crime- MLK had his start in the Montgomery Bus Boycott of 1955o SCLC (Southern Christian Leadership Council) Economic pressure Marches Civil disobedience- SNCC (Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee)- Sit-inso Sit in restaurants that refuse them service and stay all day- Freedom buseso Sat intermixed in states where it was legal but remained seated once they crossed borders where it was illegalo Klan intervenedo Police let them have free rain for 15 minutes before they moved in and brought ordero Victims were taken to hospitals Whites were treated Blacks were
