HIST 2112- “History doesn’t repeat but it rhymes”- Four waves of immigrationo 1880-1920 = third wave Corresponds exactly with industrial revolution One of the main reasons behind it Peak decade (1900-1910)- 9 million people came 28 million people total came Catholic, Orthodox, or Jewish- Why come to the US?o Make some moneyo Very likely you were pushed out by your own country more than you were pulled into the US War refugees Economic collapse Religious persecutiono Many come but do not stay Half of the Italians return home One-third of all immigrants return home- Immigrants disperse across the countryo Usually congregate around their countrymeno Stay usually up northo Not many come to the south- Immigrants were crunched togethero Slum lordso Was not unusual to have more than 10 per apartmento Sanitation was horrifico Was miserable for the people- Working conditions were awfulo 16 hour dayso Paid very littleo Often worked in your apartment- Political machines (organizations)o Exchange favors for votes Get them jobs Help them with foodo Want nothing but moneyo Everywhere in big cities- Why don’t Americans like immigrants?o Their faith (isn’t Protestant) Orthodox, Catholic and Jewisho Fear of a threat to their jobso 1882 – no Chinese immigration is legalo 1920 – no Asian immigration is legalo 1965 – legal for Asians to immigrate
