Photographic elements: lenses VII. Photographic elements Current LectureA) Cinematography1) definition: writing in motion2) choices are made about what is filmed and how it is filmed 3) cinematographic qualities include the photographic aspects of the shot(focus, film stock), the framing of the shot(scale and angle) and the duration of the shot B) Framing: scale1) how big is the object or person you’re taking a shot of2) Different shot scales: - Extreme long shot( ELS, XLS)-landscape dominates the shot- Long shot(LS)- you can make out more of the figure and it also shows the environment/background as well- Medium long shot(MLS)-this is from the knees up and you see the background out of focus, this is the most common in cinema**- Medium shot(MS)-background is out of focus and the object/people are shotfrom the waist up - Medium close up(MCU)-the shot is of the upper torso and head - Close up(CU)-the shot is of the head and shoulder - Extreme close up(XCU)-usually subdivides the head C) framing: angle 1) style is determined by an individuals film, a angle doesn’t represent something- high angle-looking down on someone - low angle-vise versa of high angle-camera is looking up - straight on-camera is straight in front These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. GradeBuddy is best used as a supplement to your own notes, not as a substitute.- canted-slightly to side D) Camera movement - Pan-camera stays in the same spot, it goes left and right - Tilt- camera stays in the same spot, it goes up and down - Track-create an actual track to move the camera, the camera is moving with the subject and the camera is kept constant - Handheld-camera is jerky and is held by someone, this is the most common in todays cinema**- Crane-swooping in from above, camera is on a crane - Renware=mobile framing E) Photographic elements: lenses - Wide angle-exaggerate depth of a scene; distorted background - Telephoto-reduces sense of depth, flattens the image - Normal F) Photographic elements(talk more about this in the next lecture) - Depth of field - Deep focus - Deep space - Deep focus
