Goals Modes of documentary Current LectureA) Documentary1. a documentary is a mode of filmmaking that purports to represent factual information about the world and that presents itself as factually trustworthy 2. some people say that a documentary is the first form of cinema3. documentary has a long and varied history and it also has a long and complicated theoretical problem B) Where we see documentaries1. actualities-genre of film- first form of cinema - examples: filmed people leaving a factory 2. Newsreels- People didn’t have easy access to news like we do and this was one way for people to know about the news - Newsreels would come on before a movie 3. Television- T.V came around in the 1950’s 4. Feature length- Appear in theaters These notes represent a detailed interpretation of the professor’s lecture. Poetic- make overt claims about the rhythms and beauty of the appearance of the film - Example: Rain (Joris Ivens, 1929)2. Expository: make very basic truth claims and has voiceover narration explaining whatyou’re supposed to think/see- Example: The River Pare (Lorentz)3. Observations: the truth claims come from being a fly on the wall, camera is there to see the unfolding and the camera isn’t supposed to be noticeable - Camera is not acknowledged - This came out of America - Example: reality T.V 4. Participatory: filmmakers on screen and talking to the people - Participate and engage with the people - Example: Chronicle of a Summer(Jean Rouch 1961)5. Reflexive: film overtly acknowledge his status as a film- Man with a movie camera(Dziga Vertov 1929)6. Performative: reflecting back on film but more emphasis on the filmmaker and what he
