Chapter 10: Congress PS 201- Gay marriage o We were founded on the idea that one group shouldn’t have more power because they’re majority o Tillis and Senate pro temp (Burger) want to appeal o Amendment One passed in 2012 primary  Older turnout  more likely to vote for Amendment one  more likely to show up at primaries - All politics is local - Congress o Descriptive: a congress that looks like the population o Subsentive: a congress that represents the people and their issues o Can men represent women’s interests? Viagra is covered by healthcare: little conflict  Birth control is a huge issue  Democrats advocate for equal pay  men representing women’s interests o Congressmen are voting in line with their local constituents  Kay Hagan is the most moderate democrat in congress because shehas to appeal to the conservative republicans in NC to get reelectedo Log-rolling  if you vote for my district, I’ll vote for things to help your district o Incumbency  the longer you’re there, the more power you have o Franking  congress can use tax money to communicate with voters backhome  Sending out flyers method of campaigning using citizen tax dollars o war power of congress  can the president deploy grand forces without support from congress  president can deploy troops for 60 days before seeking congressional support Bush doctrine: president can deploy troops for unlimited time if theUS is threatened  Did Obama break this?- Are drones essentially endless war?o Staring in 1980, congress began to overwhelmingly vote according to Party ID  Gini index measures inequality- US has one of the highest Gini indexes of the industrializedworld Inequality and Party ID voting rose together - Is correlation causation? - Are Republicans richer and Democrats
