These men studied music and the dumbing down of peoples cultural experiences. They focused on media representations and how they mask political and economic inequality. Is the use of Western media technology a Faustian contract? Yes, it is a particular way of storytelling. Faustian contract by definition is a deal with the devil. Anthropology has been interested in the idea that there are pristine cultures out there in the world. What is the Emic approach? Emic approach is from an insider’s perspective. It is when one goes into the culture and participates. Anthropology likes to think it is doing this approach. What is the Etic approach? The Etic approach is an outsider’s perspective. They use things like surveys and online sources for their research. What is a rapport?A rapport is a close and harmonious relationship in which the people or groups concerned understand each other's feelings or ideas and communicate well.Define Salvage Ethnography.Salvage ethnography is the idea that the reason that you’re filming a culture is because it is dying out. It has the underlying assumption that culture exists in traditional form and then slowly withers away. This was a very popular idea in the 60’s and 70’s. What is Nollywood?Nollywood is the 3rd largest film industry. It is cranked out with consumer=grade equipment often found on the streets and made in a couple of times. These films run the gamut of genres from action films, to melodramas to historical epics. Nigeria has a long complex tradition of filmmaking. It became in a thing in the Andes and changed how the Andes represented themselves to the rest of the world. What is the difference between Ethnographic film and indigenous film? Indigenous film is when a person in the community or culture makes a film about his or her ownculture and is almost always related to activism. Ethnographic film is when someone outside of the community comes and makes film about the community. This is done by anthropologists. What is the parallax effect? The parallax is people looking at the same thing in 2 different ways. What can we learn from Navajo photography?The photography of the Navajo people tells us little to nothing about Navajo themselves, but tellus a lot about how Western people view the Navajo. What is the relationship between Nigeria and Piracy? Piracy was a way for them to see the Western world. It was beneficial for them and allowed them to understand what was happening outside of their country. Who is Hortense Powdermaker? Hortense made one of the first ethnographies about Hollywood. He liked to thing about the social system in which these movies are made and how they deeply impact the movie itself.
