Geography 201 • Human Geography • Dr. Sarah Bednarz • Spring 2005Activity 3IntroductionTexas A&M is host to a large population of students from all over the world. One of the best ways(other than travel) to develop a global perspective is to get to know peers from other nations.ProcedureSeek out a TAMU student from a foreign nation and interview/become acquainted with that student.View this individual as a resource. Be sure that the person you select to interview is a native of aforeign country, not an American who lived overseas. If you have any doubt, speak to me.From your research/discussions with this student you should produce a working document, nolonger than 3 pages, which reflects the application of geography to an understanding of a differentculture. Try to make the interview personally relevant by asking some questions about things whichmay be of special interest to you.Your grade will be based on two things:• meaningful contact and sharing of ideas with an almost untapped resource on THIS campus: ourintemational students; and• a measure of how well you can apply the geographic concepts and generalizations we havelearned to understanding a different culture and way of life.Use the frameworks, concepts, ideas, and knowledge you have gained in this class in your interviewand analysis.StyleThis must be typed, no longer than 3 pages in length, and written in a coherent, literate manner. I donot want lesson plans or outlines. It should be written in paragraphs (new topic, new paragraph).• Include information on your source as an appendix (name, major, address, etc.). Check thedue date on the syllabus.• It may help you to organize your thoughts to reflect on the important themes of geographydiscussed in Unit 1 as you synthesize and analyze the information and cultural detail youcollect. If you are in a study group, the group may interview a single international student, but each of youmust submit your own paper written in your own words. You may wish to use your group to helpyou analyze, interpret and think geographically. Do not include miscellaneous information about yourinformant’s country. I only want details/information provided in the interview process.Turnitin.comI will use Turnitin.com, an Internet-based service, which serves as a tool to help detect plagiarism.Turnitin.com reduces plagiarism by comparing course papers to on-line resources and againstturnitin.com's database which includes books, journals, and paper-selling services. For moreinformation on this service please visit: http://itsinfo.tamu.edu/turnitin/.To use Turnitin, go to http://www.turnitin.com and follow the instructions about creating a userprofile and submitting your work. I will provide the class ID and enrollment password to access theclass.Geography 201 • Human Geography • Dr. Sarah Bednarz • Spring 2005You will submit your paper electronically to Turnitin.com and also provide me with a paper copy onthe due date.GradeYour grade will be based on the application and synthesis of the geographic perspective as evidenced inyour paper using this rubric:A (27-30 pts)--thorough and complete analysis of the interviewee's culture using geography terms andconcepts; actual use of many key vocabulary terms; rich and detailed application of the geographicperspective (spatial and environmental/ecological); source appendix; very well written, clear, no punctuationerrors.B (24-26 pts)--some analysis of the interviewee's culture using geography terms and concepts; a few keyvocabulary terms employed; application of the geographic perspective (spatial andenvironmental/ecological); source appendix; well written, clear, only one or two punctuation/spelling errors.C (21-23 pts)--a partial analysis of the interviewee's culture using geography terms and concepts; conceptsused but no specific vocabulary; incomplete application of the geographic perspective (spatial andenvironmental/ecological) and some misunderstandings of concepts; source appendix; unclear and uncertainquality of construction.Below average work will receive lower
