The egg is fertilized and turned into a zygote. Sex of the child is determined and there is rapid multiplication of the cells. The hollow blastula is developed. Cells in the blastula differentiate. Human Chorionic Gonadotropin is produced, and will cause a pregnancy test to be positive. Embryonic Period- Occurs from week two to week eight. This is when the major structural development occurs, along with embryonic disc growth. The placenta filters fornutrients and waste excretion. It also protects the fetus from bacteria, though viruses and drugs can still pass through. The umbilical cord and amniotic fluid arise. The ectoderm will change into the skin, nerves, brain and sense; mesoderm into blood, muscles, and excretory system; the endoderm into the digestive, endocrine, and other organs.Fetal Period- Occurs from week nine to delivery. Organ function and maturation takes place. Heart beats, brain waves are detected; baby can have reflexes and sleep. Spontaneous abortion may occur because of genetics, placenta interruption, toxins, maternal conditions, radiation, etc. Three supportive structures for the fetus are: 1. Placenta2. Umbilical Cord3. Amniotic SacThree stages of labor and delivery:1. Stage one is when contractions occur about every ten minutes and last for half a minute. Towards the end, they may last for two minutes and occur every two minutes. Cervix expands to let the baby’s head through.2. In this stage, the baby’s head moves through the cervix. This usually lasts for about an hour and a half. The stage concludes once the baby has passed entirely through the cervix. 3. In stage three, the umbilical cord and placenta leave the birth mother.
