Course title: History 1302 Online Course description: A survey of United States History since 1877. Assistant City Manager in Texarkana, Texas. Seventeen Years at South Plains College. Ten Years Internet and ITV Experience. Textbooks Required reading: The American Nation Volume 2, Carnes, Pearson, 13th/2008 Assignments : Note that all assignments can be found on the Calendar. A detailed explanation of each course component will follow. Course Grade : Your grade is determined by the number of points you earn on the four parts of the course: Bulletin Board Postings, Multiple Choice Exams, Essay Exams. 2205-2450 = A; 1960-2204 = B; 1715-1959 = C; 1470-1714 = D; Less Than 1470 = F Extra Credit : The only extra credit given is the syllabus exam (50 points) that must be taken during the first week of the course. Please do not ask for additional extra credit as the answer will be no. Multiple Choice Exams : Over half of the course grade comes from your performance on these exams. When you are ready to take the exams, click on Assessments found under the Course Menu or follow the pages in the individual modules. You will have 50 minutes for these exams. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU HAVE A STUDY GUIDE AVAILABLE ON THE HOMEPAGE OF THE COURSE. Essay Exams : Each essay exam allows you 90 minutes to carefully formulate your answer. Do not attempt to cut and paste from Word. Simply type your answer in the space provided, then proof your material. Do not copy from the text or any other source. There is an automatic plagiarism checker in WebCT. Students should type several paragraphs and explain the topic as if the reader has never heard of the topic. Also, please use examples when possible. Your topic may have only a few lines in the text but remember that it fits into a section of the chapter and the chapter as a whole. For example, if you received this question: " Describe the little finger on your left hand," you would be tempted just to describe the finger. A good essaywould elaborate on how it works with the other fingers, the hand, the arm, your other hand, etc. Your professor will then know that you understand the topic. During the course of the semester, at least one essay will be a critical writing assignment. Spelling and grammar is also a component of your grade. SAVE YOUR ANSWER BEFORE SUBMITTING OR I WILL RECEIVE A BLANK PAGE AND YOU WILL RECEIVE A ZERO. PLEASE NOTE THAT YOU HAVE A STUDY GUIDE AVAILABLE UNDER COURSE MENU. Discussions : The topic(s) of your weekly discussion postings are found on the Discussions tool found under the course menu. Your posting should begin with the title of the topic. Write a long paragraph very briefly telling about the contents of the reading and then an extensive reaction (your thoughts about the topic). Later in the week read postings by other students and then make a second posting agreeing or disagreeing with another student. Please write a long paragraph explaining why you agree or disagree. You must make two postings during the week and follow the above instructions to receive 25 points. On the Monday after the assignment period has ended, your professor will post your points to My Grades found under the Course Tools. Policies : There are two major things to consider regarding this course: 1. I will accept no excuse for late work. Start early and finish early. If your computer is broken then you can go to a public computer to do your work. 2. Dishonesty of any kind on examinations or essays will result in the student being dropped with an X or an F for a course grade. The choice of grade is up to the instructor. Additional information: For the Multiple Choice Exams you will have 50 minutes to take each exam (THIS MEANS THAT YOU MUST BE PREPARED--YOU WILL NOT HAVE TIME TO LOOK UP EACH QUESTION). You will have 90 minutes to complete each of the essay exams. Do not copy from the text or any other sources. This will result in you receiving a zero for the exam grade. Use your own words and use proper essay form including correct grammar and spelling. PLEASE NOTE THAT ALL OF THESE EXAMS ARE TIMED AND YOU WILL NOT BE ABLE TO MAKE SUBMISSIONS AFTER THE TIME IS UP FOR ANY REASON. ALSO EVERYTHING YOU DO IS RECORDED IN A FORM THAT I CAN VIEW-THAT INCLUDES A RECORD OF EVERY TIME YOU ACCESS THE SITE AND WHAT YOU DO INCLUDING ANY EFFORTS AT COPYING THE QUESTIONS The time of the WebCT server will be followed. Always start and finish early. Drop Policy : If you do not log on during the first two weeks of the course, you will be dropped from the course. If you do not attempt to complete three assignments in a row, you will be dropped with an X. Otherwise, it is your responsibility to drop the course. Late Policy and Technology Problems : THE PROFESSOR WILL ACCEPT NO EXCUSE FOR LATE WORK. The system is programmed to prevent your submission of late work. Start early and finish early. If you have an unreliable server or computer, please go to a public computer to do your work. If for some reason the professor or the WebCT server has made a mistake, you will not be penalized. Be aware that when something only happens to you, it is your problem. The professor is not responsible for natural events or acts of terrorism. Please always start early and finish early to avoid problems.Special Services : Students with disabilities, including but not limited to physical, psychiatric, or learning disabilities, who wish to request accommodations in this class should notify the Special Services Office early in the semester so that the appropriate arrangements may be made.
