HISTORY 1302 WEST FRENSHIP SPRING 2011 COURSE SYLLABUS HISTORY OR THE U.S. FROM 1876 to the Present Required Text: The American Nation 13th ed. Vol. II Course Requirements: There will be ten to twelve grades given each of the three parts of the course. 1. We will have short writing assignments analyzing primary source documents. 2. You will have outside readings picked by me covering the various topics in U.S. history. 3. You will read the textbook. 4. We will have quizzes over the readings, and the textbook. 5. WE will have discussions. I will make every effort to include each student in the discussion. This is a participation grade. I expect you to state your opinion on matters we discuss. When you state your opinion it means you have to think. I want you to think in this class. 6. We will have exams covering the chapters in the book. 7. Grading: We will have exams over the chapters in the book at a rate of about one exam every three to four chapters, as well as lecture notes and discussion material in class. Exams will consist of 40 questions: Multiple choices, True-False, Matching and Placing Events in Order. There will be eight short answer questions, answer five. Sometimes there will be five Fill in the Blank Questions covering dates. There will be two essay questions, answer only one. Exams will count 50% of the class grade. Quizzes will count 35% of the class grade and in class writing assignments and participation will count 5%. Participation consists of taking notes in class and contributing to the class discussion. Homework will count 10% of the class grade. Homework is due on the date assigned. I will accept late homework with a 15 point deduction. Final exams count 20% and are counted separately. Short writing assignments are completed in class and counted in the 10% Homework grade category. 8. Course Outline: Part One. Exploitation of the west. Forging an Industrial society. Political reform and corruption. The Industrialization and Urbanization of America. Beginnings of the U.S. Empire. The Spanish-American War. Part Two. The Struggle for Justice at home and abroad. The U.S. becomes a world power. World War I. We will read All Quiet on the Western Front at this time. The1920s and the Great Depression. FDR and the New Deal. Pre-war U.S. and World War II. Part Three. The making of modern America, 1945 to the present. The civil rights movement. The cold war. We will read The 13 Days about the Cuban Missile Crisis at this time. Political turmoil in the 1960s and 70s. The Regan Era. International relations and the fall of the USSR. The politics of the center. 9. Final Exams. Finals count 20% of the class grade and will be given at the regularly scheduled final exam time. Do not ask to take the exam early, the answer is already no. You will be in the final exam for the entire time it is scheduled. The final is comprehensive.10. You are expected to follow the rules and guidelines as set forth by South Plains College and the Student Code of
